~ The Bureau of Meteorology is Australia's national weather, climate and water agency. ~

Its expertise and services assist Australians in dealing with the harsh realities of their natural environment, including droughts, floods, fires, storms, tsunami and tropical cyclones. Through regular forecasts, warnings, monitoring and advice spanning the Australian region and Antarctic territory, the Bureau provides one of the fundamental and most widely used services of government.

The Bureau contributes to national social, economic, cultural and environmental goals by providing observational, meteorological, hydrological and oceanographic services and by undertaking research into science and environment related issues in support of its operations and services. 

Position Overview 

The Bureau is seeking two operational forecasters (Professional Officers Class 2) to join the Bureau's Northern Territory Regional Forecasting Centre to contribute to the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC). Click here to learn more and view the full job description. 

Responsibilities  

  • The successful applicants will monitor the Asia - Pacific region (including Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines) for volcanic ash, and provide volcanic ash analyses, dispersion forecasts and risk assessment support products to the international aviation community.
  • They will also provide briefings to both media and industry, and will contribute towards remote sensing and volcanic ash dispersion research undertaken in support of VAAC operations. 

Qualifications 

  • Scientific Knowledge - A sound knowledge of the science of volcanology and/or meteorology, with an emphasis on remote sensing and dispersion modelling.
  • Communication and Liaison Skills - Sound written and oral communication skills and an ability to work in a team environment and liaise effectively with a range of clients, media and other Bureau staff.
  • Client Service - A capacity to understand client needs and deliver services to best meet those needs.
  • Personal Drive - Requires initiative, reliability and thoroughness. A willingness and ability to undertake shift work and tasks outside routine duties. 
  • Social Justice - A demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the Bureau's Social Justice Strategies. 

Mandatory Requirements:  

  • A Bachelor Degree from an Australian educational institution, or a comparable overseas qualification, which is appropriate to the duties; OR relevant experience and training, which enables the employee to competently perform the duties at this level.
  • Note: Volcanic ash is a specialised field. Volcanic ash specific competency training will be conducted after joining VAAC Darwin.
  • Specific skills that are required for the position are advanced satellite detection and an understanding of the impact of volcanic ash on aviation. 

Compensation: $76,025 - $86,438 pa, plus 15.4% superannuation.
