Located in Berkeley, California and Santiago, Chile, Bio Architecture Lab (BAL) is dedicated to producing the world's lowest cost, most scalable, and sustainable source of sugars for biofuel and renewable chemical production. The feedstock source is aquafarmed, native macroalgae (seaweed), which can be grown globally.

Position Overview:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the technical development and optimization of processes for the pretreatment of feedstock and validating the pretreatment in fermentation. Specific tasks include maintaining the process development lab, carrying out process trials in the laboratory, develop new processes and optimize existing ones, scale-up, and technology transfer.

Reporting to: Development and Engineering

Responsibilities:

  • Identify and optimize pretreatment and fermentation parameters.
  • Carryout experiments targeting yield improvement and cost reduction.
  • Carry out data collection and samples analysis.
  • Work with contractors, vendors and outside organizations to complete assigned projects.
  • Provide technical supports.
  • Organize and deliver technical information to internal and external customers.
  • Prepare and deliver project reports, presentations, proposals, and other documentations as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor or Master Degree in Chemical Engineering or related discipline with 3 or more years of industrial experience. Or a Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering or related discipline with 0 to 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of process sciences and biochemical engineering.
  • Good track record in developing and scaling up processes/technologies from lab scale to pilot plant and/or production scale.
  • Ability to develop technical creative solutions. Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of an interdisciplinary, diverse team.
  • Accuracy and consistency in performing analyses. Lab experience is essential.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
