Description

The Climate Corporation is a technology company with offices in San Francisco and Seattle that helps people and businesses adapt to climate change. We are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of our customers around the globe by managing their weather risks. Position Overview:

Do you love playing with terabytes of weather data? Are you equally at ease with multi-proxy climate reconstructions, linear inverse models of ENSO, or point process models of precipitation fields? Do you want to make a real difference in the world?

The Climate Corporation is hiring versatile statistical climatologists to help develop innovative risk management products that empower people to cope with uncertain weather and climate change. Our extraordinary mission is to build a detailed statistical model of all possible weather events everywhere on Earth, so that every weather risk can be comprehensively managed with our products.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with a team of software engineers and data scientists to build and validate innovative statistical models of climate variability and weather risk
  • Develop and critically evaluate new historical reanalyses, climate indices, proxy reconstructions, long-range forecast models, and other data products through engagement with government agencies and the larger research community
  • Write software for mission-critical applications in insurance pricing and risk management
  • Quantify current climate conditions, trends, and uncertainties to inform risk management decisions
  • Exercise leadership as The Climate Corporation's representative in the climatology community

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in statistics, climatology, geophysics, or a similar discipline
  • Proven track record of excellence
  • Expertise in statistical climatology and probabilistic model evaluation, including prior experience with statistical downscaling, Monte Carlo methods, multivariate spectral methods, and extreme value theory
  • Familiarity with stochastic weather generators
  • Experience working with real-world, large-scale observational data sets
  • 5+ years of scientific computing experience with a high-level programming language, such as Python or MATLAB
  • Collaborative software development skills and demonstrated passion for high-quality, well-documented, open-source code
  • Communication and teamwork skills

Compensation: What we offer:

  • Opportunity to use science to change the way that millions of people manage weather risk
  • Opportunity to develop and publish novel methods in statistical climatology that leverage cloud computing and large-scale machine learning
  • A motivated, talented team of software engineers and research scientists who work together to get things done
  • Open, energetic, idea-driven work environment
  • Locations near South Park in San Francisco and Pioneer Square in Seattle
  • Competitive salary, stock options, and great benefits

We are very serious about our work, and we are serious about having a great time doing it. If you are the best at what you do, and are looking for like-minded people dedicated to having a major impact on the world, we are eager to talk with you.
