Position Overview

At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Principal Scientist to join our Strain Discovery group in a dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA.

The Principal Scientist, Photosynthesis, Photosynthesis leads and conducts research to evaluate the photosynthetic properties of algae and cyanobacteria in order to develop strategies to maximize growth and productivity. 

Qualifications  

Required Skills: 

  • In collaboration with senior leadership, design and install methodologies to identify and measure key photosynthetic parameters in laboratory and field cultures of cyanobacteria and algae on defined timelines.
  • Coordinate research with Strain Development and with Process Research and Development groups.
  • Design, execute, and direct development of selections and screens for improve photosynthetic performance in algae and cyanobacteria.
  • Design, execute and direct experimentation to identify targets of opportunity for improve photosynthetic efficiency in proprietary algae and cyanobacteria.
  • Provide in-house expertise in the fields of light-reactions and dark-reactions.
  • Maintain a culture of safety in the laboratories and other R&D facilities.
  • Comply with Synthetic Genomics' company policies including observance of US and California laws and regulations. 

Required Experience: 

  • Requires a PhD in Phycology, Microbiology, Plant Biology, Biology, or related field and a minimum of 3-7 yrs relevant postdoctoral plus industrial experience. 
  • Detailed knowledge of photosynthetic light and dark reactions is required.
  • Experience with photosynthesis measurements, including CO2 uptake and O2 production, P-I curves, and fluorescence are required.
  • Experience with generating and characterizing photosynthetic mutants is desirable.
  • Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate interactions with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers.
