The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) drives principled solutions through rigorous analysis, reasoned negotiation, and respectful dialogue. Founded in 2007 by former Senate Majority Leaders Howard Baker, Tom Daschle, Bob Dole and George Mitchell, BPC combines politically-balanced policymaking with strong, proactive advocacy and outreach.

As the only Washington, DC-based think tank that actively promotes bipartisanship, BPC works to address the key challenges facing the nation. Our policy solutions are the product of informed deliberations by former elected and appointed officials, business and labor leaders, and academics and advocates who represent both ends of the political spectrum. We are currently focused on health care, energy, national and homeland security, housing, transportation and the economy.

Position Overview:

This position will support the activities of BPC's Energy Project, which consists of several initiatives, and other BPC projects as needed. BPC's Energy Project is committed to developing bipartisan policies that enhance America's ability to provide affordable, reliable, diverse and sustainable energy. The position reports to the Director of Communications.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of the Press Secretary include:

  • Interacts daily with top energy and other media outlets in Washington and beyond;
  • Establishes close working relationships with reporters at key national print, broadcast and online outlets;
  • Functions as a resource to top journalists on a routine basis;
  • Places original stories in major publications, and brings BPC perspective to broad number of energy and other stories;
  • Generates on the record media opportunities for top BPC energy and other figures, and acts as on the record spokesperson on energy for BPC;
  • Develops and executes communications plan and press strategy for report launches and project initiatives
  • Writes press materials, including media advisories, press releases, op-eds, talking points and other collateral items;
  • Reviews and contributes to BPC energy reports and other content;
  • Responsible for developing messaging for project leadership and co-chairs;
  • Coordinates with Senior Web Producer to manage and contribute website content and social media outreach;
  • Plans and executes media events in coordination with BPC events team;
  • Develops strong working relationship with Capitol Hill and Administration communications and other staff members;
  • Engages media opinion leaders, including columnists, editorial writers and political reporters and bloggers;
  • Manages and maintains media lists; employs relevant social media tools and engages with social media outlets;
  • Coordinates media outreach with Vice President and Director of Communications;
  • Serves as Communications liaison to the Energy Project;
  • Assists in all aspects of BPC communications planning.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have 5-10 years experience as a senior communications professional, with a strong preference for 3-5 years experience in this capacity in a congressional office or industry. Issue area experience related to energy, technology and related topics preferred. Expertise in dealing with senior level national media, print, on-line, and broadcast, is necessary. A proven track record of attracting key national media attention around reports and other policy initiatives will be critical.

The ideal candidate will also have experience and capacity in social and electronic media. The candidate must possess superior writing and verbal communications skills, and be able to produce high quality press releases, statements, op-eds and other materials rapidly.
