The Union of Concerned Scientists, an environmental and arms control advocacy organization, seeks an experienced media professional to work in its Washington, D.C. office to publicize UCS programs, positions, experts, and research with local, national, and international press.
This position requires superior writing skills, a keen news sense, and the ability to juggle multiple priorities on tight deadlines.
Responsibilities: In partnership with the media director, the press secretary develops media strategies to obtain widespread coverage for UCS experts in national and regional print, television, radio, and Internet media outlets. This includes developing messages, training UCS spokespeople, writing press materials, cultivating and pitching reporters, and organizing and executing press events.
The press secretary also serves as a UCS spokesperson with international, national, and local reporters. The press secretary supervises an assistant press secretary, hires and manages media consultants, and represents UCS in coalition media efforts. Qualifications:
The position requires a minimum of five years experience in media relations or journalism, as well as previous supervisory experience. Candidates must have excellent communication skills, strong attention to detail, the ability to work under pressure, outstanding interpersonal skills, and a strong interest in environmental and security issues.
