BEW Engineering is an electrical and mechanical engineering consultancy with internationally recognized expertise in the areas of utility-scale wind and solar photovoltaic energy technologies and applications. Our clients include utilities, project developers, systems integrators and technology developers.
Position Overview:
BEW seeks a Power System Engineer to expand our capabilities in the performance of transmission and distribution interconnection, planning, smart grid, and PV penetration studies for utilities, regional transmission system operators, state and federal agencies and developers of large scale wind and solar energy projects.
The ideal candidate should be a current utility engineer, utility consultant or a recent advanced degree power engineer looking to apply his or her power system engineering skills to the rapidly growing renewable energy market.
Responsibilities:
Specific duties include:
- Performance of steady-state power flow, transient stability and short circuit analyses to evaluate system impacts related to generator interconnections in accordance with FERC procedures
- Development of steady-state and dynamic models for new wind and solar generation technologies
- Development of single line diagrams and associated documentation for generator interconnection applications
- Design of medium voltage in-plant power distribution systems for wind and solar energy farms
- Distribution system modeling with knowledge of coordination studies, substation relay protection, and system performance studies
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with power systems emphasis
- 5+ years experience in the planning, design and/or operations of electric utility transmission and distribution systems
- Familiarity and working knowledge of transmission and distribution planning studies, including power flow, transient stability and short circuit analyses
- Working knowledge of utility transmission and distribution system control and protection practices
- Strong written and verbal communications skills, including ability to write clear and detailed technical reports
Desired Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in electrical engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT) in California, or ability to obtain same
- PSS/E, PSLF, Power World, SynerGEE and/or ASPEN OneLiner experience
- Working knowledge of grid interface power electronics
- Modeling and simulation of drives and converters via EMTP derivatives (e.g., PSCAD or PSIM)
