Position Overview:
The Seismology Group within the Atmospheric, Earth, and Energy Division in the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate has an opening for a postdoctoral staff member to do original and independent research relating to the development and analysis of geothermal technologies. We are seeking an individual with a specialization in seismology and signal processing with knowledge of forward and inverse calculations. The successful applicant will have access to LLNL's high performance computing facilities. This position will report to the Seismology Group Leader.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research relating to the detection, location and characterization of microearthquakes induced by Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS).
- Conduct self-initiated research in seismology or other area of specialization.
- Present research at meetings and publish in refereed journals.
- Work as part of a scientific team.
- Perform all assignments in accordance with ESH&Q, Security, and business practice requirements and policies.
Marginal Duties:
- Assist in formulating and preparing proposals, reports, and giving briefings as needed.
- Collaborate with researchers in other national labs, government, academia and industry.
Qualifications:
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Recent PhD in seismology, geophysics or associated field.
- Demonstrated creativity, ability, and knowledge in seismology or signal processing.
- Experience in collecting, processing and analyzing local or regional seismic data.
- Research experience in geothermal technologies or signal processing.
- Ability to interact effectively with a team of interdisciplinary scientists having different backgrounds.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience writing and presenting reports, publications, and proposals.
Desired Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Experience in single and multi-channel signal processing techniques for seismic event detection and location.
- Experience in forward and inverse modeling.
- Knowledge of near-surface geophysics and basic rock properties.
- Familiarity with UNIX and LINUX platforms.
- Ability to program in JAVA, C, C++, or FORTRAN.
- Familiarity with parallel computing.
