The Climate Trust, a growing non-profit based in Portland, OR, is a national leader in the development and promotion of high quality greenhouse gas offset projects.  The mission of The Climate Trust is to promote climate change solutions by providing high-quality greenhouse gas offset projects and advancing sound offset policy. 

Position Overview: 

The Climate Trust is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our expanding offset policy team.  The individual will play an important role in The Climate Trust's policy initiatives at a variety of levels.  This is an exciting opportunity to work on highly innovative climate change solutions in an energetic, collaborative, and congenial atmosphere.

The Policy Associate will provide support of The Climate Trust's policy strategy and activities.  The individual will work on a number of key policy initiatives, including engaging at the state, regional and federal levels on emerging greenhouse gas (GHG) offset regulation.

The Policy Associate will also assist with the work of the Offset Quality Initiative (OQI). OQI was founded by The Climate Trust in November 2007 to provide leadership on GHG offset policy and best practices. OQI is a collaborative, consensus-based effort that brings together the collective expertise of six leading nonprofit member organizations.

Responsibilities: 

Key responsibilities of the Policy Associate will include:

  • Track and analyze existing and emerging climate change policy and regulation at the state, regional, federal and international levels.
  • Research and prepare written comments and white papers, policy summaries and updates, meeting minutes, and other documents on GHG offset policy.
  • Help to develop opportunities for The Climate Trust in emerging state and regional GHG regulatory programs.
  • Represent The Climate Trust and provide comments and testimony as necessary at a range of regulatory and policy proceedings, conferences, and meetings.
  • Coordinate meetings, events, press releases, and conference calls.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a master's degree in public policy or administration, or a related field, or a bachelor's degree with at least 2 years of professional experience in climate change mitigation or policy, or a related field.

Qualities Desired:

  • Self-starter willing to take the initiative and work independently
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Working knowledge of climate change mitigation policy and carbon markets
  • Team player with a sense of humor
  • Ability and willingness to travel

Compensation: The starting annual salary for this position is in the range of $36,000-$41,000.  The Climate Trust offers a highly competitive benefits package, including a "cafeteria" medical, dental and vision plan; 3 weeks of vacation; flexible work hours; a 401K plan; and a bus/bike incentive program.
