Appalachian Mountain Advocates is a non-profit public interest law and policy organization dedicated to protecting the communities and natural resources of central Appalachia and advocating for a just and sustainable economy for the region.

Founded in 2001 as the Appalachian Center for the Economy & the Environment, the organization has worked with individual citizens and grassroots groups over the last decade on the most important issues facing the region. We conduct research and analysis, and we carry out precedent-setting litigation strategically designed to protect the environment and the health of communities.

Appalachian Mountain Advocates is working to stop mountaintop removal coal mining, to protect communities from the adverse health effects caused by water and air pollution generated by resource extraction, coal-burning power plants and other destructive practices, and to protect and restore the region's hardwood forests, which are the most biologically diverse and productive temperate hardwood forests in the world.

Position Overview:

Appalachian Mountain Advocates (Appalmad) is seeking a policy analyst. Appalmad is a regional law and policy environmental advocacy center in central Appalachia focusing on mountaintop removal coal mining and other environmental issues in the region. Responsibilities: 

  • Primary responsibilities include gathering and analyzing extensive information related to coal mining and other environmental issues in central Appalachia and working with the Appalmad legal team.
  • Other responsibilities include working with experts and academics on scientific issues related to ongoing legal cases, writing comments to state and federal agencies, developing relationships and communicating with state and federal agency personnel, environmental groups and citizens.  

Qualifications: 

  • The ideal candidate would be a highly motivated self-starter able to work independently to identify new projects and priority areas.
  • Familiarity with the Clean Water Act and environmental science (including aquatic ecology) is preferred.
  • 2 or more years of experience in the field along with a related academic background is preferred. 

Compensation: This is a full-time position that offers a competitive non-profit salary commensurate with experience, good medical benefits and leave policy.
