Hours:  40 hrs./week

Student Conservation Association intern will assist the Greene Co. Soil & Water Conservation District (GCSWCD) through its Watershed Assistance Program (WAP) with the development of a locally driven Mountaintop Community Recreation, Open Space, Cultural and Scenic Quality Resources Strategy.

Significant outreach to engage multiple stakeholders in the Greene County portion of the NYC Watershed is required as well as the ability to inventory and catalogue resources in the project area using GIS and GPS.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, such as facilitating individual and group contacts, organizing and supporting a Project Advisory Team and smaller focus groups with meeting schedules, documenting progress, keeping parties engaged, and providing overall planning support to the process. Experience with GIS is required to comprehensively inventory and evaluate existing outdoor and cultural resources.

Other learning opportunities are available as time and funding allow including assisting in the development and implementation of a streamside riparian program and working in cooperation with the GCSWCD, local municipalities and other watershed stakeholders to implement turbidity reduction practices identified in stream management plans and a watershed-wide strategy developed for the Schoharie basin in the Catskills.

Salary/Housing:  Student Conservation Association living stipend ($160/wk), health insurance, and AmeriCorps education award. Housing stipend available for out-of-area candidate.

Degree required: BA/BS/MS

Fields of interest:  Natural Resource Planning, Environmental Science, Watershed Management, Education & Outreach, Community Planning, AutoCAD, Geographic Information Systems.

Other information/requirements:  Member must have strong interpersonal, communication and computer skills, including effective writing and outreach to broad constituency. Personal transportation required.
