Internship Overview
Smart Growth America is seeking a Paid Intern to support the Local Leaders Council (LLC), a national network of elected and appointed leaders in cities across the nation.
The Local Leaders Council Intern will be a core member of the LLC team and will help develop tools and resources to support top municipal decision makers.
The position is full-time, 40 hours a week. A commitment of six months required. Position begins January 2016 and is based in Washington, DC.
Responsibilities
- Main responsibilities will include supporting events related to the Local Leaders Council project;
- Research on best policies and practices;
- Drafting of briefs and presentations; and
- Interviewing city leaders and staff regarding implementation lessons and effectiveness of initiatives.
Qualifications
Requirements
- Successful applicants will be self-motivated, detail-oriented individuals with excellent writing, oral communication, research, and organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
- Candidates should have a strong interest in smart growth, economic development, transportation, real estate, community growth, or related areas.
- Candidates should have at least a bachelor’s degree and either an educational background or work experience in local government, transportation policy, community development, urban planning, environmental studies, real estate, or a related field.
- Candidates should be highly computer literate with specific experience in web research, database management, and using the Microsoft Office suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of Photoshop, HTML/CSS, Word Press and/or other open source web interfaces are a definite plus.
Compensation: Each Internship comes with a stipend of $460 per week. In addition, Interns will receive six days of paid sick leave or vacation per six-month Internship and will have paid leave on all federal holidays that occur during their the tenure at SGA.
