Background:

Save Our Wild Salmon (SOS) is a nationwide coalition of conservation organizations, commercial and sport fishing associations, businesses, river groups and taxpayer advocates. Our current priority is an exciting national campaign to restore endangered salmon and steelhead by partially removing four dams on the Lower Snake River. The Coalition has offices in Seattle WA; Portland, OR; Boise, ID; Spokane, WA; and Washington, DC.

Duties:

    Full-time staff position responsible for:
  • all aspects of outreach to member organizations, allies, and the targeted public both in the Northwest and nationally.
  • The Outreach Director designs and implements the campaign's outreach strategy;
  • works with SOS staff and campaign partners to develop joint outreach workplans;
  • tracks the outreach budget;
  • assists in the development of messages, materials and messengers for outreach;
  • identifies and cultivates activists in targeted areas to meet campaign goals;
  • coordinates outreach events, comment generation, and other showings of public support around the country;
  • and has special responsibility for outreach in the geographic area in which s/he resides.
  • The Outreach Director supervises and serves as team leader for the SOS's outreach staff, and staffs the Campaign's Outreach Team.

Other Duties:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate strategies to achieve the Coalition's outreach objectives, including crafting outreach workplans. Supervise SOS outreach staff, hire and supervise contract employees for outreach as needed, and manage outreach contracts with campaign partners.
  • Assist the Associate Director with budget preparation, tracking and reporting and have lead responsibility for managing the outreach budget.
  • Lead campaign outreach activities in the Northwest and nation, such as events; constituency outreach; and coordinating outreach activities with policy and communications staff and campaign teams, including targeting key states, districts and media markets for outreach.
  • Engage organizations, members and allies in the campaign and ensure effective access by the campaign to national and regional group memberships, activists, publications and websites.
  • Work with the same team to develop messages, materials and messengers for outreach, including national editorial board visits, events, elected leader contact, and salmon shuttle trips to DC.
  • Assist Policy Director in identifying the campaign's geographic priorities; identify activists in targeted states and districts through existing contacts, campaign leaders and partners to meet campaign outreach goals; and identify and seize outreach opportunities that increase the visibility of campaign messages in targeted areas.
  • Take lead responsibility for outreach in Western Washington (if based in Seattle) or Oregon (if based in Portland), including making presentations, tabling, phone banking and other organizing efforts, or recruiting volunteers for these activities.
  • Work with Communications Director and outreach staff to generate Letters to the Editor and Op-Eds when needed.
  • Work with Internet Outreach staff to grow and maximize use of the database to advance campaign visibility and activism through email alerts, advocate newsletters, and other means.
  • Coordinate outreach events, comment generation, and other showings of public support around the country, including legislative efforts in targeted states and Congressional districts.
  • Work with Communications Director to produce outreach materials (written, visual, and electronic), such as slideshows, banners, stickers, mailers, action alerts, and website content.
  • Ensure effective distribution of campaign materials, including marketing the campaign website nationally as an active, effective tool for citizen involvement.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate discipline and at least four years experience in outreach or organizing for environmental, political, or other advocacy organization. Position requires excellent written and oral communication, public speaking experience, and attention to detail.
  • Strong time management skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to juggle competing priorities are essential.
  • Experience may substitute for education.
  • Some evening and weekend work and frequent travel within the Northwest and to Washington, DC is required.
  • Must be able to provide own transportation to events in and around the Seattle or Portland area.
