Description

Author Frances Moore Lappé seeks a full or part-time colleague with a strong entrepreneurial spirit to help lead the small, social-benefit 501(c)3 organization she and her daughter Anna Lappé co-founded. We are searching for a creative, motivated, energetic colleague who shares our commitment to democratic social change (articulated, for example, in our recent release Getting a Grip: Clarity, Creativity & Courage in a World Gone Mad www.gettingagrip.org).

The position will take its shape in response to the talents and interests of the strongest candidate. The position could range from mid- to senior-level in responsibility and compensation, depending on the candidate.

The qualifications of the Organization Co-developer show strength in one or more of these areas:

1) organizational/administrative development
2) writing and editing
3) media and other outreach

It is expected that this position will work collaboratively with the principals to ensure that opportunities in all three areas are realized.

Background:

Since the Institute's founding in 2002, its principals have published five books-two of which are national bestsellers-along with numerous articles, book chapters, and three mini-documentaries. Other activities have included research travel to more than a dozen countries, hundreds of media interviews, speaking events and contributions to boards of national and international initiatives and the creation of five web sites. Additionally, we have founded the Small Planet Fund, which channels support to democratic social movements worldwide and Small Planet Media, which published our most recent book.

Presently, the Institute is at a crossroads, with many avenues open to further our goal of speeding the emergence of "living democracy" to meet today's unprecedented global challenges. In this time of change, we are open to candidates with a range of strengths and will adapt the position to build on the particular traits of the most outstanding candidate.

The three areas are:

Manager/Developer: The primary responsibility is development and oversight of technology and personnel systems to increase the creative productivity of the Institute. This position would include designing job descriptions and hiring and supervising a part-time administrative staff person, interns, volunteers, and contract talent as well as developing revenue sources to support them.

Qualifications include:

* significant entrepreneurial, administrative and management experience
* experience in web site development and oversight
* financial management and fundraising experience

Writer/editor/Co-Planner: The primary responsibility is overseeing the development of new books, articles, speeches, blogs, videos and more to continue to strengthen the impact of the Small Planet Institute. The most important qualification is superior writing and editing skills and experience in related areas.

Director of Media Outreach: The primary responsibility is overseeing publishing, publicity and marketing in the U.S. and abroad. Channels include all media - radio, TV, on-line - plus special outreach to colleague organizations and academia. Here we are looking for considerable experience and demonstrated success and knowledge of the market for the Small Planet Institute's work.

For all three areas, qualifications include a proactive and positive personality, broad awareness of social issues and movements, and strong, entrepreneurial project development skills.

Start time: No later than March 2008. Hours and salary are negotiable based on experience and the final shape of the position. Health and dental benefits.

Please email resume, emphasizing applicable skills and experience, as well as a cover letter describing your interest in the mission of the Small Planet Institute and why one or more of these three areas attracts your energies. Please put "search" in subject line.
