Description
Smokey House Center is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that uses daily farm and forestry tasks to teach academic and work readiness skills to crews of 6 at-risk teenage workers in a non-residential setting. We offer two types of internships. Educational internships provide an introduction to hands-on, integrated teaching. Organic gardening internships provide an introduction to organic gardening techniques.
Responsibilities:
Interns in the organic gardens will work independently and alongside youth crews in the everyday operation of Smokey House's diversified organic farm. Much of the work will focus on the 1.5 acre organic vegetable gardens which supply a 30 member CSA program and weekly farmer's market sales. Interns will learn about soil preparation, seeding, transplanting, weed and pest control, irrigation, greenhouse management, harvesting, and marketing as they assist in carrying out these tasks. Other work may include, but not be limited to, blueberry cultivation and harvesting, haying, animal husbandry, and Christmas tree care.
Positions are available from April through mid-October.
Qualifications:
Genuine interest in working on a small, diversified, organic farm, interest in working with youth, ability to work as part of a team, driver's license in good standing, ability to carry out hard physical labor, willingness to work in extremes of heat and sun and cold and rain. Some background in agriculture and/or working with youth is helpful but not necessary.
Compensation: Housing and a stipend are provided.
