Description

Smokey House Center is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that uses daily farm, forestry and environmental research tasks to teach academic and work readiness skills to crews of at-risk and other youth in a non-residential setting.

We offer two types of internships. Educational internships provide an introduction to hands-on, integrated teaching. Organic farming internships provide an introduction to a variety of organic farming techniques and some experience working with youth.

Responsibilities:

The Organic Farming Intern will work independently and alongside youth crews in the everyday operation of Smokey House's diversified organic farm. Spring internship projects will include sheep husbandry, maple sugaring, and organic gardening. In the late winter and early spring, the Organic Farming Intern will assist our shepherd in caring for the flock as they give birth to new lambs.

As spring progresses, work will include assisting in the many aspects of maple syrup production, from tapping the trees to canning the syrup. In the late spring much of the work will focus on the 1.5 acre organic vegetable gardens which supply a 30 member CSA program and weekly farmer's market sales.

Interns will learn about soil preparation, seeding, transplanting, weed and pest control, irrigation, greenhouse management, harvesting, and marketing as they assist in carrying out these tasks. Other work may include, but not be limited to, blueberry cultivation and harvesting, landscaping, and Christmas tree care.

The spring Organic Farming Internship will begin in late January/early February and run through April. Continuation of the internship through the summer may be possible.

Qualifications:

Genuine interest in working on a small, diversified, organic farm, ability to work as part of a team, driver's license in good standing, ability to carry out hard physical labor, willingness to work in extremes of heat and sun and cold and rain. Some background in agriculture is helpful but not necessary. Compensation: Housing and a stipend are provided.
