Description
The Northwest Earth Institute educates and motivates individuals to accept responsibility for the earth and to act on that commitment. NWEIs initial outreach tool is a series of five discussion courses: Exploring Deep Ecology, Voluntary Simplicity, Discovering a Sense of Place, Choices for Sustainable Living, and Globalization and Its Critics. After a course is over, NWEI offers a variety of follow-up programs.
NWEI has an annual budget of $550,000 and a staff of 10 in Portland, plus an extensive network of chapters and volunteers throughout the Northwest. To share NWEI programs with autonomous groups in other regions, NWEI created the National Earth Institute Network.
Duties:
Since NWEI was founded in 1993, co-founder Dick Roy has been the Executive Director, serving as a full-time volunteer. Under a new three-year plan, NWEI will transition to all paid staff by October 1, 2005. The new Operations Director will assume operational responsibilities currently held by the Executive Director.
The Operations Director will be responsible for:
- Portland-Area Operations. Outreach in the Portland area with discussion courses, home eco-parties, and high school program, and new initiatives.
- Northwest Communities. Over time, responsibility for the outreach through chapters and volunteer groups in Northwest communities.
- Membership Development; Grant Seeking. Membership development which will have a high priority over the next three years; some grant seeking work.
- Additionally, the Operations Director will be involved, but not responsible for, strategic planning, communications, budgeting, and fundraising from individual donors, but will not be involved in the National Earth Institute Network.
Qualifications:
- At least 3 years of relevant experience working within an organization.
- Demonstrated skills as an effective supervisor.
- Strategic judgment, creativity, and the focus required to achieve results.
- A record of setting goals and achieving results, individually and as a supervisor.
- Excellent communications and writing skills.
- Experience in a job where oral communications, by phone or in person, were required to achieve results. (For example, a sales or marketing position.)
- Demonstrated concern for the earth in line with NWEIs mission of motivating individuals to take personal responsibility for the earth and act on that commitment.
- A background in membership development and/or effective technology use in small organizations would add a helpful dimension.
