The Green Building Certification Institute is a separately incorporated entity with the support of the U.S. Green Building Council responsible for credentialing programs related to green building practices as defined by industry systems such as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating SystemsTM. 

Position Overview: 

The Green Building Certification Institute is assembling a dynamic, integrated team of green building specialists to provide technical expertise for LEED certification and the advancement of the LEED Rating Systems.

Each Team Lead manages a team of professional LEED Certification Reviewers and serves as a primary technical subject matter expert for the evaluation of projects pursuing LEED Certification. This individual draws on cross-cutting knowledge of, and direct experience with, the suite of LEED Rating Systems to serve as a resource and problem-solver for technical issues pertaining to LEED.

A Team Lead is currently sought in the Building Operations and Maintenance area.

Individuals with specific language skills strongly preferred: (Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Mandarin, and Arabic).

Responsibilities:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaboratively manage staff by providing direction, training and mentoring
  • Provide expert guidance to the review of projects, primarily in the LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance rating system
  • Work with other Team Leads and the GBCI Quality Team to ensure technically rigorous, accurate, consistent and timely completion of LEED certification reviews
  • Perform quality control (QC) review of work done by other GBCI LEED Certification Reviewers and external review teams
  • Educate the LEED marketplace through comments and technical advice to project teams
  • Develop enhancements and improvements to LEED and the certification review process based on personal knowledge and vision, or user feedback
  • Contribute to the continuing development and increasing technical knowledge-base of LEED Certification Reviewers through shared research, documentation, and teamwork
  • Develop, review, and refine LEED programs, policies and plans, as well as specific LEED credit language and reference materials
  • Maintain currency of expertise by staying abreast of new and developing industry issues and trends
  • Provide technical support as needed to the LEED Customer Service team
  • Along with other GBCI management, develop budgets, track metrics and assist with strategic planning process
  • Perform administrative tasks related to staff management as necessary (e.g., timesheet and expense report approval, annual performance assessments, etc.)

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Review project documentation for prerequisites and credits for compliance with LEED requirements
  • Provide enhanced review within designated specialty
  • Liaise with USGBC Technical Development team, LEED Technical Advisory Groups, USGBC Resource Development team, USGBC Education team, GBCI Credentialing team, and other internal and external groups as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Employee Supervision:

  • Manage and supervise a team of up to 10 people

  • Support GBCI's mission to become the premier organization independently recognizing excellence in green building performance and practice globally
  • Encourage and accelerate global adoption of green building practices through LEED standards, tools and performance criteria
  • Offer a comprehensive portfolio of programs including technical tools and services supporting LEED products to meet the diverse needs of the building industry
  • Provide technical expertise to other departments in the organization
  • Streamline LEED certification processes and procedures among consultants and committees

Qualifications:

Education and Training Requirements/Preferences:

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in a field of study related to one or more of the following specialties:
    • Building Operations (facility management, property management)
    • Environmental Science (ecology, biology, environmental management)
    • Architecture (architecture, landscape architecture, interior design)
    • Engineering (mechanical, civil, structural)
    • Planning (urban/transportation/environmental planning, urban design)
  • Currently licensed professional in specialty area preferred. Other professional certifications as relevant to area of expertise
  • LEED AP required; with specialty preferred (BD+C, ID+C, O+M, ND)
  • LEED Certification Reviewer certificate preferred (required after hire)

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years supervising staff or teams in highly challenging environment
  • Working knowledge of budgets and budget process
  • Minimum 5 years direct professional experience in area of specialty. Having expertise in more than one of the areas listed below strongly preferred
  • Experience with a variety of high-performance building projects, including LEED projects. Specialization in a high-performance building attribute such as energy efficiency, water efficiency, materials efficiency, indoor environmental quality, etc.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret building floor plans, sections, site plans, zoning maps, interior furniture and finish plans, construction specifications and operational policies
  • Detailed technical understanding of and experience with one or more of the following design and building topics: common construction methods, materials specification, fenestration, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, electrical systems, landscape design and management, master planning, land use, zoning, urban development
  • Detailed technical understanding of and experience with common environmental building codes and standards relevant to specialty, (e.g., ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 62, ASHRAE 55, UPC/IPC 2006, Title 24, IECC, GreenGuard Certification, Green Seal, ANSI/SMACNA 008-2008, NPDES, NEPA, NFIP, ASTM E1903-07 Phase II ESA, NatureServe, HUD )

  • Experience serving in technical consultative role
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing
  • Excellent ability to clearly explain advanced technical issues in manner that is easily understood
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Strong sense of personal responsibility and accountability for delivering high quality work
  • Ability to work well both independently and on teams
  • Willingness to self-initiate
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office suite and LEED Online
  • Passion and commitment to USGBC mission required
