Based in Portland, Oregon, the Old-Growth Forest Campaign Legacy Coordinator is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day activities needed to support a multi-state legislative campaign, including campaign coordination, media communications, grassroots outreach, and the development of e-mail alerts, background papers, web-based campaign materials, and other tools. 

The person holding this position will work in partnership with the national, state, and local environmental organizations seeking old-growth forest protection legislation. This position reports to Oregon Wild's Conservation Director. 

General responsibilities: 

Outreach (40%) 

  • Working with coalition partners, develop a grassroots outreach plan aimed at creating greater awareness and support for the protection of old-growth forests;    
  • Working with coalition partners, identify important opportunities for grassroots outreach and public education;    
  • Develop fact sheets, background papers, postcards, action alerts, and other educational materials as needed to support the campaign;    
  • Organize campaign representation at important outreach opportunities, including concerts, neighborhood fairs, outdoor recreation events, etc., and with the goal of increasing support for old-growth protection;    
  • Working with coalition partners, identify and seek the endorsement of key businesses, recreation groups, local elected officials, and other opinion leaders.

Communications (30%) 

  • Working with coalition partners and Oregon Wild's Conservation Director, draft and implement a communications plan for the old-growth protection campaign;    
  • Draft press releases, opinion pieces, letters to the editor, and other media materials needed to generate coverage of the old-growth campaign;    
  • In coordination with coalition partners, identify and develop relationships with key members of the news media;    
  • Distribute media materials, make follow-up pitch calls;    
  • Organize press events, teleconferences, editorial board visits, and other forums to promote the old-growth campaign;    
  • Working with coalition partners, identify key old-growth stands; develop fact sheets and acquire photos and video to assist in advocating for their protection.    
  • Develop and maintain web-based old-growth campaign materials.

Coalition Coordination (20%) 

  • Organize and lead weekly conference calls with coalition members to coordinate activities;    
  • Maintain coalition e-mail listserv;    
  • Draft and/or edit coalition letters and position papers;    
  • Track developments on legislative campaign and related issues, distribute information to coalition groups;    
  • Organize and facilitate bi-monthly meetings with campaign partners.

Legislative Support (10%) 

  • Working closely with American Lands Alliance and Oregon Wild's Conservation Director, provide the first draft of letters on old-growth legislative matters, as well as educational materials for decision makers;    
  • As necessary, coordinate field tours and meetings with Congressional staff.

Requirements: 

  • A demonstrated personal commitment to conservation;    
  • Knowledge of federal forest policy and management;    
  • Experience in developing and running grassroots campaigns;    
  • Knowledge of media outreach, along with excellent written and oral communication skills;    
  • Ability to manage conflict and work with people of diverse backgrounds;    
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks;    
  • Ability to travel throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Salary & Benefits: 

This position is full-time, with benefits, through June, 2008. Continuation is likely, but dependent on grant funding. Salary is $27,000 to $32,000 per year, based on experience.
