Communities for a Better Environment (CBE) is an environmental health and social justice nonprofit organization that seeks to achieve environmental health & justice by building grassroots power in and with communities of color and low-income communities.

CBE's unique three-part strategy provides grassroots organizing, strategic research and legal advocacy to urban communities disproportionately impacted by industrial pollution while promoting clean, green, and health promoting solutions at the local, regional and federal level. CBE directly equips residents impacted by the industrial pollution with the tools to transform their immediate environment.

Position Overview:

Communities for a Better Environment has an opening for an Office Assistant in our Oakland office. Duties include clerical tasks, project-based work, routine data entry and managing office needs. Additionally, the Office Assistant will assist in coordinating and orientating volunteers and interns.

Responsibilities:

Major responsibilities include providing ongoing administrative and clerical support for our Oakland office which includes:

  • Perform general clerical duties to include but not limited to: photocopying, faxing, mailing, and filing;
  • Manage and order supplies within the budget guidelines of the organization.
  • Operate computer and other office machines such as fax, calculator, copier, telephone system;
  • Maintain files and work space;
  • Proof and prepare documents and presentations, including PowerPoint presentations;
  • Manage submission of time sheets for staff;
  • Make travel arrangements;
  • Develop, implement and conduct office staff and office volunteers training meetings;
  • Organize and inventory publications and materials;
  • Research information on the Internet;
  • Set up and coordinate meetings and conferences;
  • Data entry;
  • Coordinate and maintain records for staff office space, phones, parking, company credit cards and office keys;
  • Collaborate with administrative, finance and human resources department in CBE's Southern California office;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualification:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and using Internet search engines;
  • Strong verbal communication skills;
  • Strong writing, analytical and problem?]solving skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and complete a variety of tasks, and ability to work efficiently and calmly under pressure and deadlines;
  • Management and volunteer coordination experience;
  • Must be reliable, motivated, have a strong work ethic, detail-oriented, be able to keep confidences and have a positive attitude;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Background, experience or interest in environmental health and justice desirable;
  • Minimum work experience preferred: 1-2 years administrative support experience.

Compensation: $12-$13 per hour; 25 - 30 hours a week; Health and Dental medical insurance benefits; Generous paid vacation, sick and holidays
