Green Mountain Farm-to-School (GMFTS) is a nonprofit organization promoting the health and wellbeing of Vermont's children, farms and communities by providing programs to connect schools and farms through food and education. In the 2010-2011 academic year, GMFTS aims to serve 24 school communities in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont with school gardens, educational programming and fresh local farm foods, benefiting over 2,500 students.

Position Overview:

The primary responsibilities of the Nutrition and Agriculture Educator will be to develop, grow, present, and evaluate GMFTS' educational programs and provide general operational and administrative support. This is a full time year long AmeriCorps position.

Responsibilities: 

The Educator will:

  • Lead weekly 2-hour after-school program at school sites
  • Lead in-class nutrition, agriculture workshops, and farm field trips for students
  • Lead summer program activities for students and community members
  • Plan, develop, and maintain educational materials
  • Purchase, distribute, and maintain program supplies and equipment
  • Design and distribute outreach and publicity materials
  • Collect, analyze, and report data for program evaluation
  • Work as an independent member of a team of educators
  • Provide general support to organization, as necessary

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
  • Strong interest in working with children, teaching experience preferred
  • Knowledge of gardening and vegetable production preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly growing non-profit environment
  • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation

Compensation: AmeriCorps Members who complete their term of service in a full time position will receive:

  • A biweekly stipend totaling $11,900 for the year
  • Health insurance, if not covered under another policy
