The NSO operates forefront facilities for ground-based observational research by the scientific community on Kitt Peak, Arizona, Sacramento Peak, New Mexico, and at six GONG sites around the world. NSO has a leadership role in the design, proposed construction and operation of the next-generation, 4-m class Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST).
Position Overview:
Depending on qualifications the candidate will be considered for either Science Track or Tenure Track. He/she will conduct a research program utilizing the Dunn Solar Telescope instrumentation with focus on polarimetric measurements of solar magnetic fields at visible and infrared wavelengths.
He/she will also utilize and support instruments at the Dunn Solar Telescope (DST), in particular the Spectro-Polarimeter for Infrared and Optical Regions (SPINOR) and the Facility Infrared Spectropolarimeter (FIRS). The position is located in Sunspot, NM. Both SPINOR and FIRS are new instruments designed to take advantage of the diffraction limited imaging delivered by adaptive optics at the DST.
Operation of these instruments is serving as a learning tool for the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST), a 4m aperture telescope that will be located on Haleakala in Maui. Although, the main focus of this position is the scientific exploitation of the DST the incumbent is expected to assist in the development of instrument data pipelines, develop community data reduction algorithms in collaboration with instrument partners, assist in the development of an NSO data center for the ATST era and, participate in the definition of first light ATST science observations.
