Position Overview

If you're a solid Manager with proven experience, Jefferson County Open Space is currently hiring a Natural Resources Supervisor. This position provides you the opportunity to work for a county that thrives on working collaboratively and overcoming challenges. Under limited supervision, plan, organize, and supervise the professional management and stewardship of natural resources on Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) properties. Assign, coordinate, and direct all natural resource management activities and programs, including forest management, prescribed fire, ecological restoration, weed and pest management, and wildlife management. Work with partners to develop policies to promote best practices in natural resource management.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees land and water management activities, mapping and classification of plant communities and habitats, implementation of baseline ecological inventories and monitoring.
  • Assign, train, direct and supervise the natural resource management activities of staff, consultants and contractors.
  • Formulate policies, procedures, plans, standards for existing and new natural resources management programs
  • Develop annual work plans, goals, objectives, schedules and budgets for the Natural Resources Team. 
  • Develop and assess short and long term natural resource management strategies for the county's open space parks and stewardship programs.
  • Cooperate and coordinate with federal, state and local agencies, county departments, public and private organization, and volunteers to develop projects, grant proposals, and implement plans and policies related to natural resource management. 

Qualifications

Must have:

  • A Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in natural areas restoring and management planning and implementation.
  • 3 years (five preferred) of experience supervising the work for 2 or more full time employees (or equivalent), including conducting performance evaluations, prioritizing and assigning work, coordinating training activities, and making recommendations on hiring, termination, and disciplinary actions.
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Visioning and environmental planning skills and experience.

Prefer:

  • Master's degree in environmental science, ecology, natural resource management or related field preferred.
  • Department of Agriculture Qualified Applicator License.
  • Over 5 years of implementation experience and knowledge of the laws, principles, and practices of science-based natural resources ecosystem management including conservation and protection.
  • 3 years related experience participating in prescribed fire varying in size and complexity.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable Knowledge of the laws, principles, and practices of natural resources ecosystem management including conservation, protection and use.
  • Must have knowledge of Colorado natural communities, native and non-native plant species identification, natural area restoration techniques, forest management, wildlife management, prescribed burning and weed/pest management.
  • Knowledge of habitat requirements for various wildlife species and communities, methods for producing and maintaining suitable habitat for those species and communities.
  • Must have technical skills to oversee natural resource surveys, data collection and analysis, monitoring and report preparation.
  • Must effectively communicate, written and oral, with a variety of professional staff, consultants and volunteers.
  • Must possess or attain a valid Colorado Pesticide Applicator's license.
  • Knowledge of GIS and its uses related to natural resources management.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of public contract administration.
  • Ability to develop bid packages for projects.
  • Working knowledge of project management, budget preparation, proposal development and grant writing.
  • Ability to train and supervise subordinate workers.
  • Ability to review and critique the work of others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and tactfully with a wide range of people and personalities to establish and foster collaborative partnerships with stakeholders and public groups.
  • Knowledge of research methods & use of recreation data
  • Well-organized, self-motivated and independent worker who can develop and implement work and stay within budget.
  • Proven team player with a commitment to the vision, goals and objectives of JeffCo Open Space with respect to outdoor recreation, land conservation and wildlife protection.

Additional Information

  • Offer contingent on successful background, education and MVR check.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, if you are from out of state, you must have a valid Colorado driver's license within 30 days of hire date, and you must not have any major violations DUI, DWI, DWAI.

Compensation: $65,601.00 - $80,091.00 Annually
