Description
~ The mission of the Environmental Planning and Community Resilience Division is to protect, restore, and enhance, for the benefit of Broward County residents, visitors and ecosystems, the quality, abundance and diversity of the County's natural resources through coordinated management efforts, including research, planning, monitoring, project implementation, and outreach activities. ~
The Energy and Sustainability Program plays a central role in addressing the County's Climate Change Action Plan and managing regional climate and energy projects funded as part of a Federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant. Internally, Division staff participate in the Climate Change Government Operations Work Group looking for opportunities to reduce the carbon emissions caused by County government activities.
The Division supports the Broward County Climate Change Task Force focusing on the implementation of strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate change at the community level. Finally, staff supports the Southeast Florida Climate Compact working at the regional level to address broad issues impacting the four counties of Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach.
Position Overview
The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Natural Resources Specialist.
This position serves as air toxics program coordinator. The primary function is to ensure the proper operation of the ambient air toxics program for Broward County.
This includes following and updating the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved program Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), ensuring sampling equipment is in proper working condition, adhering to the U.S. EPA National Air Toxics Trends Station guidelines, ensure quality assurance measures are met and the validation and submission of Air Toxics data to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and U.S. EPA.
This position works closely with the Air Toxics Chemist. Critical functions are to review and validate all ambient air toxics data; field sample collection; submittal to state and federal agencies of all valid ambient air toxics data and associated quality assurance reports.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in the hard sciences such as chemistry, geology, biology or environmental science.
Preferences:
- Masters or PhD in a related field.
- Experience in ambient air monitoring and techniques, air quality assurance, air quality protection work, air toxics, chemistry, risk assessment and/or toxicology.
- Experience with AM & AT instruments.
- Experience with GC/MS and laboratory procedures.
- Program management.
- Quality assurance experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses Required:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License for duration of appointment, based on area of assignment.
Additional Information
- Requires lifting of 25 lbs and ability to climb ladders and ascend heights.
- This position requires an individual with strong leadership skills able to work independently and in a team environment.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills are required.
- Strong computer and technical writing skills are essential.
- Experience in writing and following Standard Operating Procedures and QAPP are essential.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License for duration of appointment.
