Natural Resource Instructor, Camp Emergency Medical Technician

The Green Mountain Conservation Camps have two locations. One site is pleasantly nestled in the woods alongside Buck Lake in Woodbury, Vermont. Our Kehoe Camp site is located on Lake Bomoseen in Castleton, Vermont and features a particularly beautiful mountain view.

Almost a thousand campers ages 12-16 attend our program each year. There are separate weeks open for boys and girls. Campers have a unique opportunity to meet Vermont State Game Wardens, foresters, fisheries and wildlife biologists, and others who work in the outdoors. We offer hands-on learning experiences on fish, wildlife, ecology, botany, forestry, first aid and outdoor safety topics, and so much more. There are opportunities for hiking, canoeing, fishing, archery, orienteering, and other fun activities.  

Position Overview: 

The Camp Natural Resource Instructor Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) involves aspects of being both a Natural Resource Instructor and a Camp EMT, under the supervision of the Camp Director, Assistant Director, Camp Coordinator, and Education Coordinator.

The position involves teaching courses at a residential camp ranging from first aid, hunter/firearm safety, fishing, forestry, ecology, fish and wildlife management, and outdoor recreation, as well as being responsible for overseeing the medical needs of the camp program. Responsibilities include mentoring campers in regards to medical and personal matters, ensuring health regulations are adhered to, and assisting all staff members in carrying out camp goals, objectives, and the Vermont State Fish and Wildlife Department's mission.

• This is a residential position at either the Edward F. Kehoe Camp in Castleton, VT or the Buck Lake Camp in Woodbury, VT; No exceptions.
• Room and board is included with the position.  
• Positions are open until filled.

• Position dates are from early June to late August.

Responsibilities:

• Live in close proximity with campers and be available for adolescent counseling, medical needs, and helping each camper adjust to other campers and camp life;
• Encourage and lead each camper in their participation in camp activities and interactions with other campers;
• Teach courses independently and co-teach all courses with other staff members (teach 30-45 classes weekly);
• Be ‘on call' to needs and responsibilities of camp and the campers 24 hours a day;
• Be a positive role model and leader for the campers and volunteer staff;
• Communicate to other staff about pertinent medical information;
• Monitor the health and safety of residential campers and staff (80 people/week);
• Accompany sick or injured campers to the hospital or ER and prepare accident and illness reports;
• Maintain the camp infirmary and medical supplies/medications, and dispenses/administers prescribed medications and treatments to campers;
• Deal with medical and discipline issues in an appropriate and sensitive manner;
• Ensure appropriate procedures are followed in regard to medical issues and that camp programs meet appropriate health and safety regulations; and, 
• Cooperate fully with the Director, Assistant Director, other Instructors, Volunteers, and all Vermont Agency of Natural Resources Staff.

Qualifications: 

Applicant Criteria

• Must hold a valid certification as an Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, or Advanced Paramedic;
• Minimum one year of college, preferably in Natural Resources, Wildlife, Environmental Education, or similar field;
• Willingness to work with and teach adolescents 12 to 16 years old is a must;
• Must be able to provide general guidance and leadership to campers;
• Leadership, teaching, and mentoring experience are highly desired;
• Applicants with camping, fishing, wilderness, hunting/firearm experience; and
• A valid driver's license, are preferred.

Compensation: Salary is approximately $640/week + room and board.
