Description
Heathcote Community is an intentional community of 11 adults and 7 children living cooperatively on 110 wooded acres in northern Baltimore County, Maryland. Our diet is organic and vegetarian. We practice conflict resolution and consensus decisionmaking. We have several organic vegetable, herb, and flower gardens; bees; hiking trails; and stream-side hammocks. Our historic mill houses our Conference Center, where we conduct retreats and House Concerts.
Our current big project is building a new strawbale house. The new residence features many aspects of green design and natural building, including strawbale, cob, natural plasters, natural paint, an earthen floor, a masonry stove, passive solar heating, solar water heating, solar electricity, and rooftop water catchment.
The building was designed by Sigi Koko, a green architect with many years of experience in natural building. The building site is in on land that is in the School of Living land trust. Heathcote is a drug-free and smoke-free community.
Internship Description:
This internship provides an opportunity to gain experience with construction and natural building techniques while exploring sustainable community living. Interns will work 30 hours per week on our new strawbale building under the guidance of our intern supervisor. They will learn and implement natural building techniques such as earthen plaster, lime plaster, earthen floor, cob, and natural paints. In addition, they will participate in community chores and cooking rotation.
In exchange, they will receive room and board. Interns will be housed in our 150-year-old historic grain mill and integrated into all aspects of community life, including meetings and social events. The internship can begin any time this summer or fall. A minimum one-month commitment is required.
Qualifications:
Must be enthusiastic, responsible, reliable, and willing to do hard physical work.
