Description
Bernheim is the Official Arboretum of Kentucky and one of the largest protected natural areas in the state. The Arboretum contains a diverse collection of woody plants displayed in a landscape setting on some 250 acres. The 12,000-acre research forest is managed for the protection of Kentucky native species and natural communities. Bernheim is located approximately 20 miles south of Louisville.
Job Responsibilities Include:
- Implementing Bernheim's policies and procedures for natural areas management and stewardship that will create a model for the region;
- Over-seeing all maintenance and repair functions;
- Encouraging and over-seeing natural areas research projects;
- Cultivating affiliations and collaborations with the academic and scientific communities;
- Developing relationships with neighboring landowners and the community at large;
- Working closely with the Development Department to help promote and fund natural areas activities.
A strong desire and the capacity to creatively link natural areas functions with horticulture and education is a must.
Job Qualifications:
Candidates should have:
- A four year degree in a related discipline or equivalent experience;
- A diverse knowledge of natural history backed up with strong field experience;
- Hands-on experience with natural areas management techniques and equipment;
- The ability to perform heavy manual labor;
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills;
- A proven record of staff motivation, creativity, planning, and community collaboration.
