Native Plant Nursery Internship
Natural Resource Restoration and Community Outreach
Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA)
The GGNRA Nursery System seeks an intern to assist in restoration field activities, native plant production, and volunteer outreach at the Redwood Creek Native Plant Nursery. The nursery offers modern horticultural facilities in Muir Woods--one of the nations premier National Monuments--as well as the opportunity to participate in cutting edge ecological restoration projects with community-based programming. The nursery is one of five in the GGNRA nursery system, which combined are one of the largest producers of native plants in the state.
Duties:
The intern will support almost every facet of the Redwood Creek restoration field program including volunteer management and recruitment, invasive plant removal, seed collection, plant propagation, outplanting, and ecological monitoring.
The intern will work closely with the nursery manager and other park staff as well as work independently.
The intern will have great opportunities to learn the flora of the GGNRA, fundamental nursery and restoration skills, identification of plant species through botanical keys, and other aspects of community-based stewardship.
She/he will develop and complete a long term project during the internship based on the interns interests and the programs needs.
Duties:
- Perform restoration activities throughout the Redwood Creek watershed
- Coordinate and facilitate volunteer outreach efforts
- Co-lead volunteers work days twice per week
- Participate in ecological and restoration monitoring
- Manage park restoration database entry
- Assist with plant propagation and maintenance
- Perform tasks related to facility improvements and maintenance
Qualifications:
- Ability to work with adults and children of diverse backgrounds
- Ability to work in groups and independently with little supervision
- Ability to perform manual labor and/or lift 25lbs
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to use basic computer programs
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- An active interest in volunteer recruitment and/or community stewardship
- Experience or interest with native plants and/or restoration field technology
Terms:
Start Date: October 15th, 2003.
Position is 40 hours a week, 8-12 month commitment.
Housing within the GGNRA is provided.
Interns receive $75 per week for out-of -pocket expenses.
