Description

Located on the banks of the Colorado River, the Colorado River Indian Tribes'
Ahakhav Native Plants Nursery has been providing native plants for riparian
restoration projects since 1996. We grow native mesquite, cottonwood, and
willow as well as a variety of other native and low water use exotic species. We
currently carry over 60 varieties, and have room for over 50,000 one-gallon
plants.

Duties:

  • supervising and participating in planting of native plants from seed and cuttings,
    25%;
  • supervising and participating in weeding and thinning of native plants, 25%;
  • selling plants to government agencies and local public and private retail
    customers and sharing information regarding low water use landscape choices
    with the general public, 10%;
  • supervising and participating in general nursery
    maintenance, 10%;
  • seed collecting, 10%;
  • office work, including keeping track of
    sales, inventory, budget, ordering of supplies and propagation records, 20%
  • position involves strenuous work outside, including during the summer heat, a
    large part of the time
  • duties include planting of native plants from local seed stock and cuttings, plant
    delivery, grant application requirements, contract generation and fulfillment, sales,
    tracking, and the maintenance of budget and propagation records
  • applicants
    will also be introduced to the maintenance schedules of the Preserves 2-acre
    nursery, 90'x36' greenhouse, and 3-acre grass park area
  • this position involves
    strenuous work and all applicants are encouraged to have a familiarity with the
    Arizona climate

Qualifications:

  • academic/work experience background in biology, botany, horticulture or
    related field,
  • love of plants and growing things,
  • excellent written and oral
    communications skills,
  • attention to detail, familiarity with Microsoft Office
    computer programs,
  • self motivated willingness to work hard,
  • often doing
    repetitive physical tasks,
  • valid drivers license
  • prefer person familiar with
    Southwestern native plants and an interest in southwest riparian restoration
    issues
  • an extensive management plan will be provided, including specific plant
    propagation instructions
  • must be self-motivated, have good initiative and able to
    assume immediate responsibilities under the supervision of the Nursery Director
  • Terms:

    Salary: $24,000 - $26,000, depending on experience.

    This position does not currently offer any benefits except for Workers
    Compensation Insurance.
