Description
The Canadian Environmental Youth Capacity Building Project (CBP) is a joint
initiative of four major environmental youth organizations with the purpose
of strengthening the youth environmental movement in areas such as
fundraising, communications, organizational structure and policy.
Having developed an action plan at the Capacity Building Retreat (CBR), held
from March 12 to 17, 2002, the CBP now enters its second phase. This part
of the CBP is critical and entails following up on action items such as:
developing a website, setting up a hotline, creating tool kits and guides,
and networking with a variety of groups (e.g., government, media, and
educational institutions).
Funding for this project has been secured by Environment Canada via the
Voluntary Sector Initiative (VSI).

JOB DESCRIPTION
The role of the CBP National Coordinator is to ensure that the one-year
(April 1, 2002 to March 31, 2003) action plan developed at the CBR in March
2002 is carried out in accordance with the goals, objectives and principles
of the CBP as well as the VSI funding agreement. The National Coordinator
will focus on the following areas:
1) Planning: Ensuring the long-term viability of the project
2) Tools and Support: Creating tools for and supporting Canadian YENGOs
3) Networking, Organizing and Outreach
The job description for this position will mostly (but not exclusively)
include:
Planning
Goal: To put the necessary systems in place to ensure the CBP will last
beyond one year and becomes a low-maintenance and sustainable network.
· Create CBP long term strategic plan that includes: a communication
strategy, a policy strategy, and an evaluation framework
· Create a CBP fundraising plan and secure funding for the future of this
project
· Create a strategic plan for working with cultural youth communities (e.g.,
aboriginal, francophone, and rural youth)
· outreach, hire and co-ordinate staffing or volunteers for various project
activities (e.g., evaluation framework, fundraising, policy development,
etc.)
· Administer budget and logistics of the CBP (in collaboration with Planning
Committee and the Canadian Environmental Network)
· Coordinate conference calls, meetings and email exchanges for planning
committee
Tools & Support
Goal: To strengthen and broaden existing youth environmental groups and the
work they do. In addition, secure access to sufficient funding to meet the
needs of youth groups.
· Oversee the expansion of the CBP Website to become an interactive,
accessible and useful resource tool for youth environmental groups
· Oversee the creation of a series of tool kits and guides for use by youth
environmental groups
· Provide specific solutions and resources by phone & email - someone who
will listen to your problem, then tell you who to call (i.e., what group to
contact or which website to visit)
· Maintain links with youth resources that already exist and research new
ones
· Provide support to groups in the area of funding and fundraising
· Support groups in creating their own regional CBRs
· Create opportunities for mentorship and partnerships between groups
· Provide moral support to groups
Outreach, Network and Organize
· Outreach to other YENGOs that should be involved in CBP
· Organize Annual Capacity Building Retreat
· Coordinate the inclusion & participation of youth in national and
international consultations
· Create a system to ensure that translation of key external documents are
available to groups
· Create links and build relationships with all relevant groups and
individuals including: media, foundations, government (e.g., Youth
Roundtable on the Environment, Ministers, and governmental departments),
scientific community, arts community, regional groups (e.g., northern
communities), religious groups, grass-roots organizations, educational
institutions, etc.
· Be available and have a presence at forums where youth environmental
groups and other relevant partners are meeting
WORK EXPERIENCE
*Work experience in youth environmental groups; know the cultural context of
working in this field
*Experience in the area of strategic planning
*Experience in project, financial, and personnel management
*Experience in a mentoring situations, making people feel supported
*Experience with fundraising, communication, policy and organizational
structure
REQUISITES
*Bilingual
*Knowledge of Word, Excel, internet browsing and email
*Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
*Good communication skills, ability to maintain open communication
*Self-motivated, independent worker
*Ability to manage multiple tasks
*Ability to manage information and experience in setting up long-term
organizational
management systems
*Ability to oversee staff and delegate tasks
*Be well-networked in the YENGO community and beyond (e.g., regional
contacts,
government, etc.)
CONTRACT DETAILS
- Work location: CEN office in Ottawa (applications from all parts of
Canada accepted and encouraged)
- Directed by the CBP Planning Committee, under the supervision of Chantal
Bois, CEN National Caucus Coordinator
- Contract duration: May 6, 2002 to March 31st, 2003 (Possibility of
extension if funding is available)
- Workload: Minimum 35 hours/week until March 31, 2003
- Salary: Base wages $560/week until March 31, 2003 (negotiable depending
on experience)
- Vacation: 10 days paid vacation, plus official holidays
