The National Children's Study, a planned
20-year study of children and environmental influences on their health, is
looking to fill several new positions (Scientist, Program Analysts, Post-doc
Fellow). These positions are located in the Washington, DC area at the
National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(for the post-doc position only). The Study is anticipated to be the
largest study ever of children and the influence of the environment on their
health and development. It is a major multi-agency and public-private

1. PROGRAM ANALYST

This position is located in the Program Office of The National Children's
Study (NCS), Division of Epidemiology, Statistics and Prevention Research
(DESPR). The incumbent for this position coordinates the activities of the
National Children's Study Advisory Committee (NCSAC). The incumbent serves
as the Executive Secretary of the NCSAC. In coordination with the Project
Officer for the logistics contract, work to plan the logistics for the
public and private NCSAC meetings (including telephone calls), standing and
ad hoc subcommittee meetings, and any other workshops or meetings called for
by the NCSAC. Works with the NCSAC Chair and the Program Office staff to
monitor the activities and progress of all NCSAC subcommittees and working
groups to assure that they are interfacing with the activities of the NCSAC
as needed. Help to identify issues and bring to the attention of the
appropriate individual if not readily solvable. Serve as a point of contact
for other orgranizations and institutions relative to the NCSAC. Serve as
coordinator for activities and tasks associated with the administrative
management of the NCSAC and NCSAC meetings, develop meeting agendas; arrange
and coordinate participation of guest speakers; and work with the Committee
Management staff and the logistics support contractor. Monitor and maintain
a budget for the NCSAC and develop progress reports as necessary. Ensure
that all activities comply with the regulations and requirements of the
Federal Advisory Committee Act, the NCSAC charter, the Freedom of
Information Act, NIH Committee Management guidelines, conflict of interest
guidelines, confidentiality guidelines, the Privacy Act, the NCS policies
and procedures manual, and other NICHD, NIH and DHHS guidelines.

2. PROGRAM ANALYST

This position is located in the Program Office of The National Children's
Study (NCS), Division of Epidemiology, Statistics and Prevention Research
(DESPR). The incumbent serves as Project Officer for contracts in support of
the NCS. The incumbent serves as Project Officer for the logistics and
administrative support contract. This contract provides meeting planning,
report editing, database management, and working group and Advisory
Committee administrative support services. The incumbent also serves as
Project Officer for the communications support contract. This contract
provides communications planning, website support, and materials production
services. Responsible for drafting and monitoring policies for the operation
of all components of the Study in compliance with existing Federal
Guidelines. Serve as coordinator and a point of contact for all
responsibilities, activities and tasks associated with the operational and
administrative management of the Federal Consortium (FC) and FC meetings,
develop the meeting agendas in collaboration with the Program Office staff
and the Inter-agency Coordinating Committee; arrange and coordinate
participation of guest speakers; and work with the logistics support
contractor. Prepare official reports of FC activities. Works directly with
the Office of the Director, NICHD, to arrange for the Director's
participation in FC meetings and development of meeting agendas.

3. PROFESSIONAL SCIENTIST AND PROJECT OFFICER

The Program Office of the National Children's Study at NICHD is recruiting
for a staff scientist to help develop a large cohort study of environmental
effects on children's health and development, as part of a federal
multi-agency effort. This is to be a very large national multi center study
of approximately 100,000 children and their families followed from before
birth to adulthood. This position is expected to support the scientific
planning, implementation and analysis and reporting of the study. Duties
will include synthesizing scientific data, writing study protocols,
scientific supervision of NCS research projects, interpretation and
reporting of results, serving as (or becoming) an expert on specific aspects
of the study, and working with study committees and working groups to
provide scientific support. Other administrative duties in support of the
study will also be involved. Applicants should have either a Ph.D. in a
field closely-related to topics of concern for the study or an M.D. with
appropriate additional epidemiological experience or training (e.g., an
M.P.H. or equivalent.) Desirable areas of expertise include any of the
following: statistics and study design related to longitudinal cohort
studies, pediatric epidemiology, information technology applications to
large epidemiology studies, population based behavioral science research,
population based genetics or environmental toxicology. Experience running a
large cohort study, or with community-based or other field research is
desirable. The initial appointment is for two years and is renewable every
two years with total duration dependent on programmatic needs. Salary is
commensurate with background, and Federal benefits apply. This position will
be based in Rockville, Maryland.

4. NATIONAL CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT (NCEA)

Postdoctoral Research Positions

The National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA) of the U.S. EPA
Office of Research and Development (ORD) is seeking candidates to fill one
or more Federal, three-year postdoctoral research positions starting in
2002. This announcement describes specialty areas of interest to NCEA.
For one of these positions, we are seeking an epidemiologist with interest
in reproductive/developmental outcomes and environmental exposures. This
person would participate in activities related to the National Children's
Study, as well as other
activities within NCEA
.

Candidates must be United States citizens and will have earned a doctoral
degree within the past five years. The post-doctoral positions are
three-year term appointments within the Federal Government that may begin as
early as May 2002 at a salary range of approximately $44,000 -$69,000 in the
