Earth Advantage Institute is a nonprofit organization that works with the building industry to implement sustainable building practices. Its mission is to create an immediate, practical, and cost effective path to sustainability and to the reduction of carbon in the built environment. The organization achieves its objectives through an innovative range of programs for industry professionals, including certification of high performance homes, remodels, sustainable communities, multifamily projects and commercial spaces. These programs are supported by an education department, which offers basic and advanced courses on building, marketing, and valuing green homes; and by a technical services team that provides a variety of onsite tests and energy audits.

Position Overview:

Earth Advantage seeks a Portland area Multifamily Project Specialist who will support the Earth Advantage Multifamily certification program, with specific focus on the affordable housing market. Candidates must have technical knowledge of multifamily building equipment (HVAC systems, lighting, etc.) and be conversant in the residential and commercial energy codes as they apply to multifamily projects.

Preferred candidates would be familiar with financing mechanisms for affordable housing projects via HUD, OHCS, BETC and other local
housing authorities. They should also have a successful track record of independently managing projects, proactively developing client relationships, and meeting business objectives.

Responsibilities:

Outreach:

  • Identify and engage participants (affordable housing developers, contractors, designers, builders, product vendors and other industry groups) in support of Earth Advantage Multifamily (EAMF) program within the affordable multifamily housing market sector
  • Work with federal, state, and local housing authorities through funding cycles and help support the goals of these organizations
  • Build new and leverage existing relationships within the multifamily development, architectural, and design/build construction community
  • Assist existing and new EAMF program participants through the program
  • Consistently contact and confirm commitments of existing EAMF program participants throughout the program process
  • Initial technical review of project proposals for acceptance and compliance with program guidelines and goals

Program Delivery:

  • Assist with selection and verification of installation of sustainable and energy efficiency measures accordant to program standards
  • Provide technical consultation while advising and directing participants through program procedures
  • Perform on site inspections and coordinate performance verifications with relevant contractors
  • Represent Earth Advantage, or its contract affiliates at tradeshows, tours, speaking engagements, and industry events
  • Facilitate or participant in energy workshops and strategy discussions as they relate to affordable multifamily projects
  • Enroll and support projects to achieve individual and departmental energy savings goals

Program Development:

  • Contribute to the strategic planning and pursuance of long term goals for the commercial department as appropriate
  • Support in the development of goals and objectives for EAMF programs
  • Participate in planning, research, writing, and stakeholder surveys to inform the development of EAMF program forms, collateral, processes, and offerings

Qualifications: 

Essential Qualities and Skills:

  • Intimate knowledge of the affordable multifamily housing market
  • Knowledge of the Oregon residential and commercial energy codes as they apply to multifamily projects
  • Strong sales skills including persuasion and negotiation, group presentation, problem solving
  • Superior oral and written communication skills including a capacity to effectively present to a variety of audiences
  • Customer service orientation and teamwork skills
  • Thorough knowledge of green building practices, advantages, relative costs and tradeoffs, and benefits including energy efficiency and environmental measures
  • Familiarity with commercial design and construction techniques, building materials, and performance of energy-using systems
  • Self starter with strong time management skills
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite, SalesForce CRM, and project management software
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license and good driving record
  • Must be able to work remotely and independently using personal vehicle throughout the assigned region and occasionally travel within other parts of Oregon
  • Bachelor or Master of Architecture, Community Development, Economic Development, Sustainable Development, or closely related field
  • Minimum 3 years professional experience in design or construction related industry

Additional Knowledge/Experience Preferred:

  • Project management experience
  • BPI certified
  • LEED® AP
  • Prior experience in providing energy auditing, commissioning, or measurement and verification services
  • Knowledge of DOE 2 based programs or other energy modeling software
  • Experience with HVAC systems and/or HVAC controls
