Position Overview

Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking a candidate to fill a full-time medium/high voltage electrical engineering position in our Power Market.

The Medium/ High Voltage Electrical Engineer position will be part of Hanson’s electrical engineering team that serves local, regional and nationwide clients in support of multi-discipline design and construction projects within the Power market.  General duties will include the design of medium and high voltage power distribution and management systems at various “green power (solar, wind, BESS, EV charging etc.) projects, along with traditional transmission and distribution facilities.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities

  • Prepare specifications, calculations, drawings, and construction packages for high and medium voltage electrical, systems, equipment, and processes.  This would include but not be limited to engineering design, development of single and three-line drawings, substation layouts, substation component selection, grounding studies and design, clearances, protection studies, cabling sag and tension studies, reporting and cost estimating
  • Perform quality assurance and quality control by checking project documents in accordance with corporate, national and client standards
  • Respond and provide technical assistance to field personnel concerning the areas of high and medium voltage collection, substation, and transmission equipment.
  • Perform short-circuit, arc flash, load flow, power factor, relay coordination, capacity analysis, reliability analysis and ampacity calculations
  • Respond and provide technical assistance to electrical equipment problems within supported energy facilities
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines as needed
  • Perform studies which may include: due diligence studies of existing systems, feasibility and conceptual design studies with preliminary construction cost estimates, inverter-based resource (IBR) interconnection studies, and utility master plan reports.
  • Engage in project management, attend client meetings, and coordinate system design calculations, layout, and equipment selection, editing of technical specifications, report preparation, shop drawing review, construction administration (including coordination with contractors)
  • Participate in the mentoring of engineering and design personnel
  • Other assignments as directed by market principals and project managers

Qualifications

Technical Skills:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft® Office, AutoCAD, Microtation, and/or PLS-CADD
  • Familiarity with voltage drop, fault current and arc flash calculators i.e., Easypower, ETAP and SKM
  • Knowledge of CDGES Software [new]
  • Experience with GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) a plus [new]
  • Experience with Synergi Software a plus [new]
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations [new]

Soft Skills:

  • Must be able to communicate complex technical concepts to engineers, clients, and/or public stakeholders
  • Ability to independently organize and prioritize work assignments and coordinate a variety of tasks, with good attention to detail and ability to deal with conflicting priorities and deadlines
  • Must be able to build effective relationships with internal and external client bases
  • Must be able to work independently and as a team member to problem solve and learn new technical skills

Education/Experience - Required:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Licensure as a professional engineer in Electrical Engineering in Florida, Illinois, Missouri, or Texas, or the ability to obtain licensure within six (6) months
  • Minimum of 6 years in the consulting professional services industry, in the Electrical Engineering Discipline designing medium and high-voltage power projects
  • Specific technical experience with the preparation of electrical construction drawings, specifications, submittals review and construction administration for power projects
  • Plusses include: graduate degree, professional registration, technical research, and report publications
