Description

We are currently seeking an experienced Media Relations/Communication Specialist to help us achieve our four strategic priorities; restore sustainable American fisheries, protect marine wildlife from human impacts; conserve special ocean places and reform government for better ocean stewardship.

The Communications Specialist will help advance TOC's strategic priorities by developing, executing, and evaluating targeted communication plans. S/he reports to the Director of Strategic Communications, and coordinates with program directors, and the Senior Creative Director to convey consistent messages across communication channels. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

S/he is specifically responsible for generating regional and national media coverage of TOC's priorities, and assists the Director in creating an annual media plan for the organization and four strategic priorities. Serve as primary contact with regional and national print (newspaper and magazine) and broadcast (TV, radio, and web-based) media. Maintain strong relationships with key reporters, writers, and editors as well as media forums such as the Society of Environmental Journalists, NGO coalitions, and others.

Track and analyze TOC's media activities, as well as national and regional trends in environmental reporting. Prepare reports and evaluations to inform senior staff and board members. Prepare materials and conduct training on messaging, media relations, and presentation skills to enhance the performance of program staff and other organizational spokespeople. Draft fact sheets, media advisories, press releases, and other supporting materials, and help maintain TOC's online newsroom. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience working in media relations. Experience in successfully placing news stories in national and regional news outlets. Bachelor's degree in journalism, marketing, communication or other related field. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including telephone skills. Computer experience including Microsoft Power Point, Excel, and Word, required, experience with Microsoft Project, Convio, Bacons online media directory preferred.
