Description
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, an internationally-known, multi-disciplinary Architectural and Engineering design practice seeks applications for a Materials Specialist to join its San Francisco office.
Position Overview:
The qualified candidate will provide project specific building materials research with a focus on green/sustainable products, maintain relationships with industry professionals and lead presentations to both staff and clients.
Responsibilities:
- Research building materials, fabrication, appropriate application, and specification;
- Develop and cultivate relationships with industry professionals and academic research efforts with regards to building materials;
- Direct and assist in the assembly and maintenance of a physical and digital materials library to be used for reference, presentations, and educational purposes;
- Develop and cultivate of relationship with materials manufacturers, fabricators, product representatives, and other relevant industry professionals engaged;
- Lead educational seminars within the office to elevate the awareness and understanding of the proper and critical use of materials in building design;
- Take part in team discussions and presentations with clients;
- Interface and coordinate with the Specification writers as appropriate;
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Completion of 5 or 6 year architectural degree program;
- 7 or more years of experience with the selection and specification of architectural materials;
- Extensive knowledge of manufacturers, products and materials, manufacturing capabilities and representative dealers;
- Knowledge of the computer and digital skills as it pertains to the storage and documentation of materials and suppliers;
- Knowledge of material research as practiced in academic and industrial settings;
- Knowledge of life cycles and maintenance of materials and systems;
- Demonstrated knowledge of architectural design, documentation, detailing, building codes, construction techniques and costs, as well as building material compatibility and characteristics;
- Strong communications skills to present information in a clear informative way both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated practical knowledge of general architectural practice including programming, site planning, civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering;
- Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD.
