Since 1965 The Marine Science Consortium has educated and inspired thousands of children, youth, and adults about the marine and coastal ecosystems along the Mid-Atlantic Region through place-based, hands-on experiences.
MSC Faculty on Reaseach Cruise Dr. Adrienne Oakley and students from Kutztown University are exploring the sea floor of the Pacific Ocean, hoping to answer questions about the earth's magnetic field.
Position Overview:
Looking for the type of exciting, outdoor, hands-on job experience that puts you elbow deep in algae and knee deep in marsh mud? Searching for the opportunity to share and expand your knowledge and enthusiasm about the world we live in?!?
If so, we at the Marine Science Consortium would love for you to join our team as a Marine Science Educator. Our Educators gain experience leading groups of all ages and teaching a diverse array of topics that highlight the dynamic ecosystems of a barrier island.
This position will run from February 27th through mid-November
Responsibilities:
Educators are trained to work with all programs and will work with learners of all levels, including K-12 students, college students, and adult learners. You will gain valuable and diverse knowledge regarding aquarium and field equipment use and maintenance, boat crew skills and boat safety, group leadership in laboratory and field settings, time management and marine husbandry. This highly demanding, but rewarding, job best fits individuals who work well independently and as part of a team. Candidates must demonstrate problem solving skills, time and group management skills, and enthusiasm for education and the environment.
Qualifications:
- BA or BS in Biology, Marine Science, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Education, or comparable fields
- Comfortable working long hours outdoors and on boats with learners of all ages
- Teaching experience and/or leadership experience
- Ability to submit record to NASA in order to obtain security clearance. Must be a US citizen.
- Valid driver's license with 2 or fewer moving violations in the past 2 years and no DUI or DWI charges
- Preference given for willingness to obtain a VA Commercial Driver's License
Preferred Experience:
- Previous experience working on boats
- Teaching experience and/or leadership experience in informal education.
- Experience teaching multiple age groups, from young learners to adults of all ages
Compensation: Benefits:
- Competitive salary: $300/week
- On-station staff housing provided: furnished 800 sq. ft. two bedroom apt, one bathroom, kitchen and living room, central heat and A/C, shared with max. one room mate.
