Description

Background:

The GGNRA Nursery System seeks an intern to assist in native plant production, volunteer outreach and seed collection at the Marin Headlands Native Plant Nursery. The nursery offers modern horticultural facilities overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Rodeo Beach, as well as the opportunity to participate in cutting edge ecological restoration projects with community based programming. The nursery is one of five in the GGNRA nursery system, which combined are one of the largest producers of native plants in the state.

The intern will support almost every facet of operating and managing the nursery including plant propagation, seed collection, volunteer management, youth education, land stewardship and facility management and improvement. The intern will work closely with the nursery manager, other park staff as well as work independently. The intern will have great opportunities to learn the flora of the GGNRA, fundamental nursery and restoration skills, identification of plant species through botanical keys, and other aspects of community based land stewardship. She/he will develop and complete a long term project during the internship based on the nurserys needs and the interns interests.

Duties:

  • Coordinate and facilitate volunteer outreach efforts
  • Lead propagule collection for restoration projects
  • Co-lead volunteers work days twice per week
  • Assist with plant propagation and maintenance
  • Manage park restoration database entry
  • Perform tasks related to facility improvements and maintenance

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work with adults and children of diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work in groups and independently with little supervision
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to use basic computer programs
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience or interest in native plants or horticulture

Position is 40 hours a week, 6-12 months. Housing provided.

Interns receive $75 per week for out-of -pocket expenses.
