The U.S. Green Building Council, a Washington, DC-based national nonprofit organization of over 10,000 corporate and organizational members from every sector of the building industry united to transform the building marketplace to sustainability, is currently seeking a public policy professional with significant experience in energy and environmental policy advocacy at the federal government level to assist in developing and implementing federal strategy for public policy advocacy that advances green building practice and market transformation to a sustainable built environment.
Position Overview:
The Manager of Federal Advocacy will report to the Public Policy Director and will handle multiple responsibilities in advancing USGBC's advocacy agenda in both the U.S. Congress and the federal agencies, including establishing USGBC as the leading authority and primary point of contact on green building. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about energy and environmental policy, politically savvy, and a creative idea-generator who can identify opportunities and solve problems in a dynamic organization.
Specific Responsibilities include:
- Advancing USGBC's federal advocacy agenda and building/strengthening relationships with Members of Congress, their personal staff and committee staff; federal agency political appointees and career staff; and stakeholder organizations that have an interest in green building. Specific tasks include:
- Monitoring legislative, regulatory and policy activities
- Attending and reporting on Congressional hearings and markups
- Drafting bill support letters
- Drafting testimony and preparing witnesses
- Coordinating member visits to Capitol Hill and district offices
- Setting up and attending meetings, briefings and receptions
- Attending and participating at government- and stakeholder-sponsored meetings and conferences.
- Assisting with publication of monthly listserv email, newsletter, and other communications vehicles providing outreach to the federal community, stakeholders and USGBC members about Council initiatives and activities.
- Assisting with agenda development for USGBC's Federal Summit, an annual meeting with federal agency and Congressional staff. Assisting with government-sector and advocacy-related activities held during Greenbuild, USGBC's annual educational conference and exposition.
- Supporting the projects and activities of the USGBC Codes Committee.
- Minimum 3 years of working experience in the U.S. Congress or with the federal government relations department of a private company, trade association, public interest group or similar organization.
- Strong political instincts and interpersonal skills.
- Solid analytical, writing and speaking skills.
- Ability to handle multiple concurrent responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to adapt and thrive in a rapidly-changing organization.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
