Pathways in Education, Mendocino is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating students about sustainable living, agriculture, and livestock. We farm in a way that grows the best possible food, and grows the next generation of youth leaders along with it.
We have a large kitchen garden and a farm plot maintained by visiting student groups plus orchards of pears, apples, cherries, plums and walnuts. As part of our efforts to promote Sustainable Farming, we provide Farm-to-Table instruction with classes in cheese making, mustard and jam making, and bread baking, all using food grown in our gardens.
Position Overview
The Farm Resident Advisors supports small groups of students for our Farm Program. The RAs will be assisting and participating with our students in various activities, overseeing bunks, and assisting with other duties/activities to support the program goals. $275/week room and board included.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions of Position Include, but are not Limited to the Following:
- Sleep in Student Housing to assure safety and camp guidelines are being met
- Facilitate team building games and high ropes elements with groups of 10-20
- Establish team or cohort connections with assigned Campers
- Conduct morning check-ins and meetings with students and chaperons daily
- Liaison and manage relationship between Pathways and Camp Clients
- Support Students in Experiential Learning Activities and create a safe environment for them
- Facilitate Small Group Discussion and Debrief with students
- Responsible to get all students to activities on time
- Set emotional tone for activities, provide support, guidance, and encouragemnet when necessary
- Motivate students throughout the camp process and maintain positive attitude
- Maintain positive attitude and motivation for group throughout farm program
- Lead discussions and lessons about the food system, food inequality, and personal development
- Teach lessons about farm-to-table eating (jam, salsa, bread, cheese, and more)
- Work with students to complete their units and grade their academic material
- Lead nighttime activities including night hikes, creative expression activities, etc
- Mediate conflict and encourage discussion between students
Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree
- 1-2 years experience working with At-Risk Youth
- Prior Camp RA or Teaching experience is preferred
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Employee must pass TB Test and Physical Examination
