Description

The Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a local, non-profit, AmeriCorps-affiliated organization based in Tucson, Arizona. SCC hires mostly local young adults, aged 16-25, to complete conservation work projects on public lands throughout the Southern Arizona Region. SCC has a strong environmental education component, and life skills are learned via formal lessons, on-the-job training, and the process of communal living.  SCC serves a diverse population, including at-risk youth and a cross-section of ethnicities and income levels.

Position Overview:

The Logistics Coordinator's primary responsibility is to manage logistics between the crews and the office and ensuring that tools, vehicles, and gear are in good working order so that the quality of fee-for-service programs is not compromised. The position requires both an office and field presence based on organizational needs. The Logistics Coordinator must be available for emergency trips to the field.

Responsibilities:

Vehicle Maintenance:

  • Oversee regular maintenance of crew and office staff vehicles/trailers through regular check-ups, scheduled repairs, and preventive measures using CarCare software.
  • Manage a yearly vehicle budget and fleet account.
  • Ensure that crews thoroughly clean and inspect their vehicles after each hitch.
  • Double-check all the ‘Vehicle Check-In' sheets once crew leaders complete the inspection.
  • Renew registration for vehicles and trailers with the DMV and take them to emissions testing as needed.
  • Maintain repair, maintenance, inspection, and registration records on each vehicle.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve vehicle safety and care.

Tools, Equipment, and Gear:

  • In partnership with the Field Coordinator (FC), purchase, repair, and maintain tools, camp equipment, uniforms, and personal protective equipment, and first aid supplies as needed.
  • Purchase and organize food while maintaining a clean and functional kitchen area.
  • Purchase supplies for new programs as they arise.
  • Purchase supplies and equipment to maintain the office and the shop.
  • Charge employees for lost/broken tools, equipment, or supplies.
  • Work within the established program budget by asking for approval and reporting purchases to the Program Director.
  • Maintain regular inventory of all equipment, tools, chainsaws, uniforms, and food.

Field Support:

  • Provide regular field visits and technical assistance to crews in the field as needed.
  • Participate in a rotating weekly on-call system for crews in the field.
  • Supervise crew leaders during the summer session and maintain a higher level of field presence during this time.
  • Enforce all SCC Policies and Procedures as outlined in the Field Staff Manual.
  • Assist with pre-site visits and completing project specs when needed.
  • Respond to crew emergency situations and be available for last minute travel if necessary.

Staff Development and Training:

  • In coordination with the Program Director, assist with the development and implementation of staff trainings throughout the year both in the office and in the field.
  • Develop and implement technical trainings for crews working on specialized projects.
  • Debrief each crew at the end of every hitch on vehicles, food, tools, and gear.
  • Find and attend needed development training on areas of new or current responsibility.

Facility Cleanliness:

  • In partnership with the Field Coordinator, enforce rig-up/de-rig procedures regarding cleaning up the office and the yards, using sinks and showers, keeping personal items out of the office, etc.
  • Keep the front and back yards clean through basic landscaping and disposal of trash.
  • Be willing to complete 1 office chore per week.

Data Entry and General Administration:

  • Maintain GPS and digital photo folders for project documentation purposes.
  • Enter work production numbers into a database after each completed hitch.
  • Assemble the Crew Leader binders for all crews before the start of each new session.
  • Continuously self-evaluate practices and procedures in responsibility areas to improve system efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with a conservation/youth corps program or trail program required.
  • Experience working with young adults required.
  • Strong skill level of rock construction, new trail construction, and trail maintenance required.
  • Strong skill level in the following preferred: chainsaw operation/ fire fuels reduction, tool maintenance, fence construction, backcountry travel, and risk management.
  • Strong organizational, managerial, and problem solving skills required.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Clean driving record (insurable) and a current driver's license required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some overnights in field, and participate in an emergency on-call system.
  • Current CPR and WFA or WFR certification preferred.
  • Experience working with land management agencies preferred.
  • Past experience with team building, conflict resolution, or mentoring skills preferred.

Essential Functions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to operate objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to focus. The employee is occasionally required to drive an SCC vehicle.

Compensation: Starting at $27,000.00 annually DOE. All benefits per SCC personnel policies
