Job Description:
The Loan Consultant works with low-income business owners and the self-employed in the Bay Area to solve financial needs. As a member of a close-working and growing team, the Loan Consultant provides small business loans to the low-income community. The Loan Consultant will pre-screen and qualify clients, as well as structure, recommend, and close loans.
In addition, the Loan Consultant will build and cultivate a network among the community development organizations in the area. There may be additional opportunities to contribute to strategic growth as appropriate. This is an ideal introductory position for someone interested in community development and microfinance.
Tasks/Responsibilities:
- Loan underwriting:
- Interview potential borrowers over the phone, via email, or in the field, including a basic analysis of their business and assessment of credit needs;
- Review loan application, credit report and character for creditworthiness;
- Work with Business Advisor to make an assessment of business cash flow and ability to repay;
- Present loan recommendations for approval.
- Client Management:
- Manage client relationship through application process to maximize opportunities to close loans and achieve individual and program loan goals;
- Provide translation services as needed.
- Marketing and Lead Generation:
- Act as a liaison with key community organizations;
- Generate new leads through repeat loans from existing borrowers and borrower referrals;
- Handle limited community presentations and other outreach activity as necessary.
- Loan Operations:
- Provide support on closing loans as necessary.
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree or graduating senior in relevant field (i.e. Urban Planning / Urban Studies, Economics, etc.) or 1-2 years of relevant experience;
- Bilingual English/Spanish;
- Understanding of basic business cash flow;
- Ability to multi-task and manage numerous client accounts and activities;
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
- Superior communication skills;
- Detail-oriented;
- Willingness to work in various field offices around the Bay Area;
- Commitment to LCD's mission to support low-income entrepreneurs.
