The National Center for Appropriate Technology is seeking qualified candidates for 3 full-time positions. The positions available are Livestock Specialist, Horticulture Specialist, and Organics Specialist. NCAT is interested in identifying qualified candidates with education, experience and interest in sustainable and organic agriculture.
NCAT is a private nonprofit organization that champions small-scale, sustainable and local solutions to reduce poverty, protect communities and promote natural resources. Since 1976, NCAT has trained farmers about organic and sustainable practices, monitored energy use and demonstrated renewable technology.
Position Overview: Livestock Specialist
A Livestock Specialist with a background in poultry and/or hogs will work directly with farmers to address their questions on livestock production and marketing.
Responsibilities:
- Work directly with farmers or farm groups to provide technical information on the sustainable or organic production and marketing of poultry and hogs.
- Provide information and support to farmers transitioning to organic production of poultry and hogs.
- Assist farmers with product marketing including providing information on farmers markets and local food systems.
Qualifications:
Minimum requirements include farm-based experience with a BS or MS degree in animal science, poultry science, pasture management, animal breeding and genetics or a related field. The qualified candidate must have a demonstrated interest and experience in sustainable practices as they relate to poultry and hog production and marketing.
Salary Range: $28,000 to $40,000
Position Overview: Organics Specialist
The Organic Specialist will work with farmers to provide information on how to produce organic crops and livestock. The specialist will help farmers through the difficult process of transitioning to organic production and certification.
Responsibilities:
- Provide information and support to farmers on how to transition to organic production and certification.
- Help farmers develop marketing and business plans for sustainable and organic products.
- Help farmers identify value added products including marketing to farmers markets and/or local food systems.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have a BS or MS degree or equivalent in horticulture, animal science, pest management or soils management or a related field. An understanding and experience working with USDA organic regulations is required.
Salary Range: $30,000 - $44,000
Position Overview: Horticulture Specialist
Horticulture Specialists, with background in tree fruit production, work directly with farmers and ranchers to address their questions about sustainably raising and marketing tree fruits.
Responsibilities:
- Provide information directly to farmers and farm groups related to sustainable tree fruit production and integrated pest management.
- Help farmers transition to organic fruit production
- Develop information and expertise on farmers markets and local food systems
Qualifications:
Minimum requirements include a background and BS or MS degree in horticulture or a related field in agriculture. On-farm experience is a plus as is experience with organic production.
Salary Range: $28,000 - $40,000
Qualifications:
NCAT values excellent communication skills as positions involve public speaking, writing and proposal development. All jobs may require specialists to prepare publications, topical summaries, bibliographies, workshop materials and website postings while targeting a variety of audiences of varying degrees of technical knowledge. Requirements may also include disseminating information to farmers via e-mail, telephone and in person and working with other sustainable agriculture specialists to identify farmer needs and appropriate delivery methods.
Specialists may also assist in project development activities and attend conferences, workshops, seminars and related events in support of project duties. NCAT is a mission driven organization and the successful candidate must be fully supportive of its mission. Travel is required.
