Background:

Save Our Wild Salmon (SOS) is a nationwide coalition of conservation organizations, commercial and sport fishing associations, businesses, river groups and taxpayer advocates. Our current priority is an exciting national campaign to restore endangered salmon and steelhead by partially removing four dams on the Lower Snake River. The Coalition has offices in Seattle WA; Portland, OR; Boise, ID; Spokane, WA; and Washington, DC.

Duties:

    Full-time staff position responsible for:

  • coordinating the DC-based legislative component of SOS's Columbia & Snake Rivers Campaign, including Administration and Congressional strategy;
  • representing SOS and the campaign before the Administration, Congress, and media;
  • coordinating ongoing Congressional, Administration, and media contact by campaign staff and members of the National Team;
  • identifying key target states, districts and media markets for national outreach, media and other activities;
  • and assuring ongoing development of coordinated national strategy and workplans among SOS staff, campaign co-grantees, consultants, and allies.

Other Duties Include:

  • Coordinate the national component of the Columbia & Snake Rivers Campaign. Staff the Coalition's National Team: recruit members, develop functioning team, host regular meetings, and track work assignments.
  • Assure ongoing development of coordinated national strategy and workplans among SOS staff, campaign co-grantees, consultants, and allies.
  • Represent SOS and the campaign before the Administration, Congress, and media.
  • Coordinate ongoing Congressional, Administration, and media contact by groups and members of the National Team.
  • Work with other staff and campaign partners to identify key target states, districts and media markets for national outreach, media and other activities.
  • Work with the same team to develop messages, materials and messengers for national, Congressional and Administration audiences, including national editorial board visits, events, elected leader contact, and salmon shuttle trips to DC.
  • Link national strategies and activities with Northwest outreach and policy components, maintain clear communication between and among campaign partners and staff regionally and nationally.
  • Coordinate SOS's salmon shuttle regular visits by grassroots activists and campaign leaders from around the country with Congressional and Administration offices and national media.
  • Engage national organizations, members and allies in the campaign and ensure effective access by the campaign to national group memberships, activists, publications and websites.
  • Supervise interns as needed.

Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in an appropriate discipline and at least four years experience in policy advocacy or lobbying for national conservation or fishing organizations.

Experience with multi-organization campaigns a strong plus.

Position requires excellent written and oral communication, experience with diverse groups of people, and attention to detail.

Strong time management skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to juggle competing priorities are essential.

Experience may substitute for education.

Some evening and weekend work and travel required. Full medical, dental and vision benefits and generous vacation.
