The Green Building Certification Institute, a separately incorporated entity with the support of the U.S. Green Building Council responsible for credentialing programs related to green building practices as defined by industry systems such as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating SystemsTM, is seeking an experienced green building professional well versed in the LEED Green Building Rating System to serve as a technical building subject matter expert.

Position Overview: 

The LEED Technical Reviewer serves as technical building subject matter expert and internal consultant to GBCI and Certification Bodies that review projects under the LEED Green Building Rating System. This individual draws on cross-cutting advanced knowledge and direct experience with the LEED rating system and quality audit procedures to serve as a resource and problem-solver for technical issues pertaining to LEED.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute audits of Certification Bodies' (CBs') processes, project reviews, credit interpretation rulings and customer service product
  • Administer, process and provide technical guidance and support for appeals
  • Serve as internal resource on LEED and audit procedures for internal groups that deal with technical LEED issues
  • Serve as a technical resource to Certification Body reviewers
  • Help resolve advanced technical issues related to LEED project review and rating system interpretation
  • Handle escalated advanced technical customer service inquiries
  • Assist in determining which issues need to be run through CIR process and which don't
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, and refining LEED programs, policies and plans, as well as specific LEED credit language and reference materials
  • Assist in conceiving and developing improvements to LEED and the certification review process based on personal knowledge and vision or user feedback
  • Liaise with USGBC Technical Development team, USGBC Implementation team, USGBC Education team, GBCI Credentialing team, Certification Bodies, and other internal and external groups as needed
  • Maintain currency of expertise by staying abreast of new and developing industry issues and trends
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Encourage and accelerate global adoption of green building practices through LEED standards, tools and performance criteria
  • Offer a comprehensive portfolio of programs including technical tools and services supporting LEED products to meet the diverse needs of the building industry
  • Deliver customer service that is professional, timely and targeted to the customer's needs
  • Provide Council with technical experience and knowledge as a design professional
  • Streamline LEED certification processes and procedures among consultants and committees

Qualifications: 

Minimum 10 years direct professional experience in commercial building industry specializing in architecture, engineering, construction, facility management or quality; experience in more than one of these areas strongly preferred

  • Minimum 10 years direct professional experience in commercial building industry specializing in architecture, engineering, construction, facility management or quality; experience in more than one of these areas strongly preferred
  • Detailed technical understanding of and experience with building opaque envelope assemblies, fenestration, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, electrical systems, or site/grounds
  • Detailed technical understanding of and experience with common environmental building codes and standards, e.g., ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 62, ASHRAE 55, UPC/IPC 2006, Title 24, IECC preferred
  • Currently licensed professional engineer, architect, or interior designer in good standing preferred. Master plumbers or master electricians in good standing with the proper experience will also be considered
  • Relevant experience in a variety of high-performance building projects preferred, especially LEED projects. Specialization in a high-performance building attribute such as energy efficiency, water efficiency, materials efficiency, indoor environmental quality, etc. preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical building industry-related field preferred
  • LEED-AP status
  • Understanding of ISO accreditation/certification model preferred
  • Excellent judgment, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Energetic, detail-oriented, able to prioritize
  • Experience serving in technical consultative role
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent ability to clearly explain advanced technical issues in manner easily understood by laypersons
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well both independently and on teams
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Passion and commitment to USGBC mission

This position has the option to be home-based if the selected candidate is not located in the Washington, DC area.
