The Green Building Certification Institute, a separately incorporated entity with the support of the U.S. Green Building Council responsible for credentialing programs related to green building practices as defined by industry systems such as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating SystemsTM, is seeking a green building expert to provide technical support related to the LEED Rating System.

Position Overview: 

The LEED Technical Customer Service Specialist serves as the technical building subject matter expert to inquiries received through GBCI's customer service portals. This individual draws on cross-cutting advanced knowledge and direct experience with LEED Rating Systems to serve as a resource and problem-solver for technical issues pertaining to LEED.

Responsibilities:

  • Primary responsibilities:
    • Help resolve advanced technical issues related to LEED project review and rating system interpretation
    • Handle escalated and advanced GBCI technical customer service inquiries
    • Assist in determining which customer queries require formal interpretation through a Credit Interpretation Request (CIR) process
    • Provide technical support as needed to the LEED Customer Service team via Sales Force software and phone inquiries
    • Provide updates on project certification status
    • Serve as internal resource on LEED for internal groups that deal with technical LEED issues
    • Serve as a technical resource to Certification Body reviewers
    • Deliver customer service that is professional, timely and targeted to the customer's needs
  • Secondary responsibilities:
    • Provide technical guidance and support for appeals
    • Assist in developing, reviewing, and refining LEED programs, policies and plans, as well as specific LEED credit language and reference materials
    • Assist in conceiving and developing improvements to LEED and the certification review process based on personal knowledge and vision or user feedback
    • Liaise with USGBC Technical Development team, USGBC Resource Development team, USGBC Education team, USGBC Chapters Team, GBCI Credentialing team, Certification Bodies, and other internal and external groups as needed
    • Maintain currency of expertise by staying abreast of new and developing industry issues and trends
    • Other duties as assigned

Related Organizational Goals and Objectives (optional but preferred):

  • Encourage and accelerate global adoption of green building practices through LEED standards, tools and performance criteria
  • Offer a comprehensive portfolio of programs including technical tools and services supporting LEED products to meet the diverse needs of the building industry
  • Provide Council with technical experience and knowledge as a design professional
  • Streamline LEED certification processes and procedures among consultants and committees

Qualifications:

Education & Training Requirements/Preferences:

  • Currently licensed professional engineer, architect, or interior designer in good standing preferred
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Master's degree in field of study preferred
  • Holder of current LEED-AP status, LEED-AP with Specialty preferred

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum 10 years direct professional experience in commercial building industry specializing in architecture, engineering, construction, facility management or quality; experience in more than one of these areas strongly preferred
  • Detailed technical understanding of and experience with building opaque envelope assemblies, fenestration, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, electrical systems, or site/grounds
  • Detailed technical understanding of and experience with common environmental building codes and standards, e.g., ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 62, ASHRAE 55, UPC/IPC 2006, Title 24, IECC preferred
  • Relevant experience in a variety of high-performance building projects preferred, including LEED projects. Specialization in a high-performance building attribute such as energy efficiency, water efficiency, materials efficiency, indoor environmental quality, etc. preferred

Other Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Understanding of ISO accreditation/certification model preferred
  • Excellent judgment, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Energetic, detail-oriented, able to prioritize
  • Experience serving in technical consultative role
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent ability to clearly explain advanced technical issues in manner that is easily understood
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Ability to work well both independently and on teams
  • Willingness to self-initiate
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Passion and commitment to USGBC mission
