The Green Building Certification Institute, a separately incorporated entity with the support of the U.S. Green Building Council responsible for credentialing programs related to green building practices as defined by industry systems such as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating SystemsTM, is assembling a dynamic, integrated team of green building specialists to provide technical expertise for LEED certification and the advancement of the LEED Rating Systems.

Position Overview:

The LEED Quality Auditor serves as technical building subject matter expert and internal consultant to GBCI and external teams that review projects under the LEED Green Building Rating System. This individual draws on cross-cutting advanced knowledge and direct experience with the LEED rating system and quality audit procedures to serve as a resource and problem-solver for technical issues pertaining to LEED.

Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities:

  • Execute audits of internal and external review team's processes, project reviews, and credit interpretation rulings within designated specialty
  • Provide technical guidance and support for appeal reviews
  • Serve as internal technical resource on LEED and audit procedures for groups that deal with technical LEED issues
  • Help resolve advanced technical issues related to LEED project review and rating system interpretation
  • Develop and maintain LEED reviewer resources, training materials and procedural guidance
  • Educate LEED review teams through audit comments and statistics
  • Provide technical support as needed to the LEED Customer Service team
  • Contribute to the continued development and increased technical knowledge of fellow LEED Quality Auditors through collaborative teamwork

Secondary responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing, reviewing, and refining LEED programs, policies and plans, as well as specific LEED credit language and reference materials
  • Assist in conceiving and developing improvements to LEED and the certification review process based on personal knowledge and vision or user feedback
  • Liaise with USGBC Technical Development team, LEED Technical Advisory Groups, USGBC Resource Development team, USGBC Community, USGBC Education team, GBCI Credentialing team, and other internal and external groups as needed
  • Maintain currency of expertise by staying abreast of new and developing industry issues and trends
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Support GBCI's mission to become the premier organization independently recognizing excellence in green building performance and practice globally
  • Encourage and accelerate global adoption of green building practices through LEED standards, tools and performance criteria
  • Offer a comprehensive portfolio of programs including technical tools and services supporting LEED products to meet the diverse needs of the building industry
  • Provide technical expertise to other departments in the organization
  • Streamline LEED certification processes and procedures among consultants and committees

Qualifications:

Education & Training Requirements/Preferences:

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in a field of study related to 1 or more of the following specialties:
    • Architecture (architecture, landscape architecture, interior design)
    • Engineering (mechanical, civil, structural)
    • Planning (urban/transport/environmental planning, urban design)
    • Building Operations (facility management, property management)
    • Environmental Science (ecology, biology, environmental management)
  • Currently licensed professional in specialty area preferred. Other professional certifications as relevant to area of expertise.
  • LEED AP required; with specialty preferred (BD+C, ID+C, O+M, ND)
  • LEED Certification Reviewer certificate preferred (required after hire)

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum 5, 7, 10 years direct professional experience (for Technical Level I, II, III) in area of specialty. Having expertise in more than 1 of the areas listed below strongly preferred.
  • Experience with a variety of high-performance building projects, including LEED projects. Specialization in a high-performance building attribute such as energy efficiency, water efficiency, materials efficiency, indoor environmental quality, etc.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret building floor plans, sections, site plans, zoning maps, interior furniture and finish plans, construction specifications and operational policies.
  • Detailed technical understanding of and experience with 1 or more of the following design and building topics: common construction methods, materials specification, fenestration, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, electrical systems, landscape design and management, master planning, land use, zoning, urban development.
  • Detailed technical understanding of and experience with common environmental building codes and standards relevant to specialty, (e.g., ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 62, ASHRAE 55, UPC/IPC 2006, Title 24, IECC, GreenGuard Certification, Green Seal, ANSI/SMACNA 008-2008, NPDES, NEPA, NFIP, ASTM E1903-07 Phase II ESA, NatureServe, HUD )

Other Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Excellent judgment, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Energetic, detail-oriented and able to prioritize
  • Experience serving in technical consultative role
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing
  • Excellent ability to clearly explain advanced technical issues in manner that is easily understood
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Strong sense of personal responsibility and accountability for delivering high quality work
  • Ability to work well both independently and on teams
  • Willingness to self-initiate
  • Understanding of ISO accreditation/certification model preferred
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office suite and LEED Online
  • Passion and commitment to USGBC mission
