Landscape Architecture Intern

Baltimore City is building a coalition of public-private, community based and philanthropic partners to collectively promote a "green collar jobs" workforce plan. With the support of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and our local Workforce Investment Board, Baltimore is moving aggressively to target sustainability as a growth employment sector.  

Position Overview:

The Baltimore Office of Sustainability is preparing a landscape ordinance and manual for adoption by City Council in conjunction with Baltimore's Sustainability Plan. Assistance is needed to develop the manual, draft language in the legislation and organize public meetings for review.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct research of landscape and tree preservation ordinances in other jurisdictions.
• Review existing City codes/charter to identify key impediments to environmental friendly practices
• Assist in populating information in existing environmental data base
• Organize and prepare information for public meetings
• Network with organizations and cities with similar ordinances
• Write and edit portions of Manual and Ordinance as needed
• Present findings and recommendations to officials both inside and outside City government

Qualifications:

• Commitment of at least 15/hours a week
• Background or some coursework in horticulture and/or landscape architecture
• Adept researcher
• Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders
• Well-organized and self-directed individual who is a team player
• Creative problem-solver that sees possibilities where others may not
• Desire to make Baltimore a national leader in sustainability
