Position Overview
The Land Protection Director will play a key role in achieving the conservation goals in the Land Conservancy's five-year strategic plan including: expanding the Niagara River Greenway, an Olmsted-inspired ribbon of connected parks and nature preserves stretching between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, and encompassing one of Earth's most recognizable natural wonders, Niagara Falls; identifying and protecting land in the most critical watersheds of the Niagara River, the drainage of 84% of North America's surface freshwater; preserving some of the most productive farmland in New York State; expanding partnerships with our region's Haudenosaunee indigenous communities; and ensuring that our work enhances the biodiversity and climate resiliency in our region. Our conservation work will also reflect a new emphasis on urban projects.
The Land Protection Director will report directly to the Executive Director and is a full-time position.
Responsibilities
- Identify new land conservation projects
- Conceptualize, initiate, manage and lead transformative projects in our region
- Strengthen relationships with existing partners, including individuals, organizations, agencies, and municipalities, and identify new partners
- Identify and reach out to landowners of priority land conservation properties
- Respond to land conservation inquiries
- Attend and present at community meetings and planning sessions
- Continue to enhance the natural land and farmland conservation ranking processes
- Lead all newly identified land conservation projects
- Coordinate all aspects of fee simple acquisitions, conservation easements, and assisted transactions
- Coordinate fundraising activities needed for land conservation projects including grant applications and campaigns
- Participate in organizational meetings and activities
- Lead Conservation Committee meetings
- Attend Board meetings and present project updates
- Participate in regular staff and planning meetings
- Assist with other Land Conservancy activities including events
Qualifications
- Ability to initiate and manage complex projects and negotiate with multiple partners
- A deep passion for conservation and the Land Conservancy's mission
- A Bachelor's degree is required with an advanced degree preferred
- Strong interpersonal skills, diplomacy, patience and a sense of humor
- Superb written and oral communication skills
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks
- A strong work ethic and willingness to work flexible hours
- Ability to work independently with a high level of accountability and attention to detail
- An appreciation for the importance of confidentiality
- Ability to inspire and work with staff, Board of Directors, community partners, members, and volunteers
- Professional experience with real estate transactions and conservation easements preferred
- A willingness to use a personal vehicle for work-related travel
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office required, GIS skills preferred
