~ The Lancaster County Conservancy was founded on September 17, 1969 as a 501(c)(3) to receive funds for procuring real property for present and future generations, to have desirable open space lands preserved for exercise, recreation, and education by the general public. ~

The Conservancy has 2,600+ members serving all of Lancaster County.

The mission of the Lancaster County Conservancy is to save and steward the ecosystems and landscapes upon which we depend for food, clean water and air, economic and public health, and the restoration of soul and spirit.

Position Overview

The Lancaster County Conservancy is looking for a detail-oriented administrative professional to assist our In-House Counsel and Director of Land Protection. This is a full-time non-exempt position starting January 2017.

Applicants must have excellent writing and proofreading skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines. Knowledge of real estate and/or community planning including familiarity with title issues and survey and legal descriptions is required. Grant writing and management including GIS skills are needed.  

Responsibilities 

Organizational role:

  • Full time non-exempt position starting January 2017
  • 40 + hours per week set days and times (some flexibility on both sides)
  • Supervised by In-House Counsel/Director of Land Protection
  • Committee responsibility - Assist with Land Protection Committee
  • Accountabilities
  1. 80% Land and Water Protection
  2. 20% Other -- including outreach, events and activities, administration

Comprehensive roles in an assistant capacity:

  • To provide administrative assistance to In-House Counsel/Director of Land Protection on all real estate, organization, and administrative matters
  • Work to insure proper documentation of all land acquisition projects and grant programs associated with land protection
  • Assist on all land protection, acquisition, fundraising, and planning activities
  • Respond to inquiries from neighboring landowners and research expanding preserves and possible new acquisitions
  • Assist with Highlands and Susquehanna Riverlands land protection efforts including communication with landowners, presentation to community officials and other groups and negotiation with potential sellers or donors of land
  • Prepare documentation to support funding of land protection  

Operational tasks:

  • Assist with Fee-simple property acquisition
  • All activities related to purchase of lands
  • Insure proper document management of all files, deeds, easements, surveys, appraisals, Phase I ESAs, agreements, and other information
  • Communicate with and educate property owners including responding to requests for information
  • Organize, create, and revise maps and other documentation 
  • Assist in the expansion and management of existing land acquisition funds
  • Assist in Land Protection Committee activities and meetings

Other Activities:

  • Manage the database and other computer applications to support acquisition and land protection activities
  • Participate in staff meetings
  • Participate in fund raising and other events such as the annual dinner, membership picnic, etc. as needed
  • Provide coordination and staff support for the Land Protection Committee
  • Provide adequate notice and information for the meetings
  • Provide follow-up information to committee members and the Board of Directors
  • Schedule field trips for the committee members
  • Provide information in a timely and professional manner, both verbally and written, for internal use and in response to external requests
  • Serve as manager on projects assigned by the Director of Land Protection
  • Maintain all necessary records and documentation to fulfill requirements
  • Communicate in a timely, effective manner with all parties involved in the project
  • Maintain a positive, outgoing, and friendly attitude
  • Work well with others in a helpful and cooperative manner
  • Meet with his/her supervisor as requested or needed to review programs, plans and activities 

Qualifications

  • Attention to detail is essential including proof-reading skills and the ability to coordinate settlement and funding documentation
  • Knowledge of real estate and/or community planning including familiarity with title issues and survey and legal descriptions
  • Ability to communicate clearly and excellent writing skills
  • Ability to participate in acquisition discussions and respond to inquiries
  • Knowledge of land protection techniques such as real estate purchase and sales, development of conservation easements, riparian buffer and trail easements, community planning and zoning, finance, fund raising and grant writing
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Digital Photography, GIS, and web based applications
  • Ability to research county records and on-line government database systems
  • Knowledge of GIS mapping.
  • Understanding of natural systems, and the interrelationship between natural systems, stormwater and water resources, and the ability to transfer this information to the public a plus
