Description

Intern Opportunities Fall 2003-Winter 2004

Since 1987, Toxics Action Center has assisted more than 450 New England neighborhood groups fighting toxic pollution in their communities.

Toxics Action Center trains and assists residents to wage effective campaigns against stubborn polluters and red tape bureaucracies. We pressure officials to act to protect our neighborhoods' health and safety. We provide neighborhood groups with information, organizing and group building assistance, and a network of experts to give them the power they need to win.

  • 1) Recycling
Recycling rates across New England have stagnated and state officials are moving to open up more dangerous trash incinerators and dumps. Work with residents to develop and implement effective municipal recycling campaigns.
  • 2) Pesticides
From schools to parks, dangerous pesticides that threaten our health and safety are being sprayed. Work with community activists to help stop pesticide exposure from agricultural sources, right-of-way spraying, and use by municipalities.

  • 3) Nuclear Power
Nuclear power is the most expensive and dangerous way to generate electricity. Join the Nuke-Free New England campaign and work to pressure utility and government officials to close down these dangerous plants.

  • 4) Conference Organizer
Work with staff to set up training conferences for local activists in MA, CT, ME, and VT. This will involve assisting with logistics, recruiting participants and speakers, organizing workshops, and more.

  • 5) Landfills
Research the status of landfills across New England, including shut-downs of old landfills, public health issues, and trash transfer stations.

Qualifications:
Interns must have a concern for the environment and a desire to educate and organize residents in their communities.

Experience in these areas is preferred, but not required.

Volunteer, course credit, and small stipend opportunities are available.

Internships are available year-round and applications are processed on a rolling basis. Hours and dates of work are flexible, but preferably full time for 10 weeks.
